I didn't mind the SEC challenge my only issues with it was:

1) the time of the year they played it (minor gripe)
2) It felt like we played on the road for 7 years straight. (this irked me the most)

Honestly it should've always been a big 12/big east challenge since for a while we both had 10 teams which makes matchups easier. With the SEC it always seemed that the unequal number of teams made for weird matchups.

Always seemed like we were the road team at a 3:1 ratio.

13-14: vs Auburn
14-15: vs Arkansas
15-16: @ A&M
16-17: @ Vandy
17-18: vs Tennessee
18-19: @ Ole Miss
19-20: @ Auburn
20-21: @Miss St
21-22: vs Mizzou
22-23: @ Mizzou

4 of the last 5 on the road doesn't seem right from a scheduling perspective. Also, playing Mizzou twice in a row after recently doing a home and home didn't make for a very exciting matchup. That felt like a throw away game last year even before it started.

It almost seemed more imbalanced than that, but having home games the first two seasons kind of makes it mentally misleading.

No inter-conference challenge should have a team play 3 straight times on the road. That alone shows how little effort was put into the thing. Everything after KU, Texas, and maybe Baylor, from a Big 12 perspective, seemed like an afterthought.

Making it all worse, two games, Tennessee and at Mississippi State, were absolutely horrid. (Mizzou last season was a bad one, too, but not as bad as those two).

If anybody was curious what went wrong in the Mizzou game...

Grill has a bad foul and an even worse turnover that helps seal their fate.

I didn't think Grill played bad down the stretch. The one pass was ill advised, but other players seemed to make many more mistakes that sealed their fate. The foul he committed didn't result in a made free throw.

I've said this before, but I wish there was a Big 12/Big Ten challenge to replace it.

Something like that in late December just before the Big 12 slate starts would be great.

If you paired by the preseason Torvik rankings from last year you'd get this...

Houston | Purdue
Texas | Michigan State
Kansas | Maryland
Baylor | Northwestern
West Virginia | Indiana
Kansas State | Penn State
TCU | Rutgers
Iowa State | Iowa (and yes they'd switch out of this somehow but just going with it)
Oklahoma State | Michigan
Cincinnati | Ohio State
Oklahoma | Illinois
Texas Tech | Wisconsin
UCF | Nebraska
BYU | Minnesota

I'm sure you'd tweak the matchups somewhat, but doesn't that look like fun?

I think we've mostly moved on from Grill to Mizzou generally now.

And Grill *did* throw a stupid pass in a game that ended up as a terrible loss for the Tigers.

I haven't said anything about the guy off the court.

But his play as a basketball player is completely fair game on a college sports board.

I would be very surprised if there is not a Big 10 / Big 12 Challenge in the works. Both conferences have Fox. The Big 10 / ACC Challenge was scrubbed as the Big 10 gave the punt to ESPN for other networks including Fox. Thus, the ACC / SEC Challenge formed as both are all ESPN.

I liked that the SEC / Big 12 Challenge was in the middle of conference play. I liked the break of conference grind. The Big 12 has holiday tournaments and Big East / Big 12 battles before conference play.

I know I am deviating from the Caleb Grill (I am cheering for the guy) discussion, but if Yormark wants to get into NYC, but we don't expand, wonder why we couldn't do the Big East / Big 12 Challenge in NYC all in one weekend. Gets us good exposure.

Whatever happened to the “5 to play 4” rule? Grill is in year 6, Bowman and the old Iowa QB both on year 7. It’s nuts
