Grill has played three "real" years.

ISU (COVID year, doesn't count)
UNLV
ISU
ISU

So he "deserves" another year if he wants it.

That being said, he's used his free transfer... umm... twice.

Which might mean he needs to redshirt before playing again, right?

Watch him go to Kansas or Kansas State. I actually think he'll end up at Wichita State, which would be a good spot for him.
This board seems to place higher value judgements on our Ish and Caleb than I believe is warranted. But it will be interesting to see where they land.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Ish on a NYC metro team like St. John's or Seaton Hall.

Caleb, well I don't know because he comes with baggage and there may be transfer issues given he's bounced around so much.

Wichita State isn't exactly a current power; I don't think its crazy at all to see him end up there given its his hometown. He's a grad transfer so he shouldn't have any eligibility issues.

I don't claim to know anything about Wichita's new coach, Paul Mills. But returning to his home town, more or less, makes sense for Grill.

If Pitino wants him at St John’s he’s a better player than what you want to admit.

My thoughts on this: I know everyone's been talking about how the NCAA is going to be cracking down on waivers, and maybe no more "grad transfers" but I gotta think they're going to be approving quite a few immediately eligible transfers, like Grill, mainly just to get them out of college sooner.

They allowed the extra covid year, which at the time seemed like the right thing to do, but it has created a giant backlog of players, and I would think they want to get them out of the system sooner rather than later. Forcing someone like Grill to sit out a year, just to play one more, extends the whole process even more. How they're going to decide all that though, I have no idea.
I think we can all agree this would be the right way to handle it, but can we really expect the NCAA to do the right thing?

The way the NCAA handled the “Covid year” was stupid. The fall sports had completed their seasons and the winter sports more or less had as well. The only sports that should have gotten a “Covid year” were any sports with a majority of their seasons actually cancelled.

Yes, but it is too late now. I just hope they start enforcing a consistent set of rules soon.

I think they're supposed to be...

You get four years of play.

You get ONE and ONLY ONE free transfer. Want to transfer again? Drop a level or redshirt.

You get ONE year of redshirt for medical/personal/etc. reasons.

Your clock is five years. After that, you're done.

Feel like he'll be pretty coveted. Not many SGs have that kind of ability to go off THAT big, and also being a good defender. If he's right and healthy, could definitely see him being a pretty big name in the portal.
He probably shouldn't have been starting at the P5 level. He had zero ability to pass or dribble with the ball in his hands and couldn't finish at the rim. Sure he got red hot from 3 one in every four games but also put up a lot of goose-eggs.

So, I was in KC for the semi final game against KU... After the game was over, I was waiting in line for the down escalator and a deplorable KU fan got in my face.

She was a soccer mom Karen Her kids were standing next to her) and she said " I am so glad we beat you.... I hate Caleb Grill and his family. We are from Grill's hometown and his whole family are the biggest bunch of a-holes in the city."

I said, "You truly hate a college kid because of his family? He's not even on the team anymore. That kinda harsh to literally hate a college kid."

She says, "There is one more younger kid in that family and I pray to God he never plays sports at the college level"

I said, "well that is your opinion. If I were you I would be more worried about the FBI being involved in your basketball program."

She says. "We'll get away with it. We always do."

I said (under my breath) "No wonder everyone hates you insufferable KU fans." I let it go at that point. Good riddance.

I don’t hate the idea of a medical redshirt - it seems unfair to ‘punish’ someone for getting hurt. But abolishing the transfer waiver now that everyone gets a free one seems like a no-brainer. Which makes it almost certain that they won’t do it.

I'm not saying he's not flawed, if he was any threat to score off the bounce he'd have WAY more room to work with and be more effective overall.

I'm just saying that his upside as a shooter is tantalizing and it shouldn't be surprising if he ends up somewhere solid.

Who are we trying to protect with transfer restrictions? Why have restrictions at all? I don't understand this.

hope he gets his head on straight
His head's fine. A better haircut is all he needs. :D

I say this in jest. When Caleb got his whitewall, I supported it, saying something like, 'it's fun, it's only hair, it'll grow back'. And I meant it. Then we find out his haircut was a manifestation of his mental health, or so he said.

I really have no idea what Pitino has on his roster. But as I wrote earlier, we'll see who Tang brings and then make a judgement about letting Ish go on a relative basis.
How do you know he ‘was let go’? Did Tang say that?

He did not say that. One has to make a judgement based on what has happened. Elite 8 run. Super senior. Plays ~15 minutes per game. Graduates. Loves the staff, town and school. Why would he leave if not nudged or perhaps just reads the tea leaves?
