Des Moines
Continuing my regular drumbeat on the forum of , “what is good for Des Moines is good for Ames/Iowa State” (both in terms of recruiting as well as retaining alumni post-graduation), here is some recent positive Des Moines’ related news demonstrating how well things are going.

First article on explosion of housing units downtown. 2nd one on Mid-year housing permits showing DSM metro beating out much larger metros (e.g…1.5 million+ metros like Cincy and Milwaukee), not to mention our neighbor to the west, Omaha :

More than 2,300 units planned in downtown Des Moines

Joel Aschbrenner, [email protected]12:12 p.m. CDT August 5, 2016

The rental market has boomed in recent years. Now, the biggest flood of new apartments downtown has ever seen will put the market to the test.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

· More than 2,300 apartments are scheduled open around downtown Des Moines in the next year.

· Never before have so many housing units opened in such a short period in the city's core.

· Developers say they can fill the apartments; there is strong demand for downtown rentals.

· But some are concerned that an apartment bubble could be forming.

An unprecedented wave of apartments is about to hit downtown Des Moines.

More than 2,300 rental units are scheduled to open in the next year alone in and around the city's core, a Des Moines Register analysis shows. That represents a more than 40 percent increase in downtown’s housing stock. And another 1,400 downtown apartments a…

I'm curious where this list came from and what the criteria is for forming it. It's good news for the metro to be getting more growth than other metros, but why this group of cities. Was it a list of cities under a certain population? Or a list of all metros with the most building permits pulled?

The data comes from census.gov.

It is a list of comparable cities. Nothing in Iowa is coming close to Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, etc...

I had heard that there are two or three new high rises planned for downtown? Does anyone know if this is still true? Any details? How is the walnut st redevelopment coming?

Anytime a high-rise is proposed anywhere, nothing is ever for sure until they start digging. That said, they are all still a go as of now.

www.urbandsm.com is best source I know to keep up-to-date on developments in Des Moines, the metro, and rest of Iowa for that matter. Work continues on the streetscape for Walnut St. It is not open yet and no major retailers announced yet. That said, given two of the towers are proposed within blocks of each other on Walnut, that will go a long way in getting this street active again if those get built.

Well, one tower appears to be on very solid footing. Probably didn’t hurt for local Blackbird Investments to partner with a Chicago developer, CA Ventures.

Justin Doyle, a partner in Blackbird Investments, said he is "100 percent" confident the tower will be built.

“It’s already in the bag,” he said.

Most current version lost 3 floors from prior proposal, but is larger overall and upgraded in several ways…including cost.

This could break ground as earlier as November…

The hanging pool

On the 26th floor, the building will feature a cantilevered pool that hangs over the edge of the building.

It will jut out about 11 feet from the building's west edge. The pool walls will be constructed with glass so brave swimmers can look through the water down at the city below.

Bumping an old thread rather than start a new one..

Anyone else see they are building a Porsche dealership in WDM off of Jordan Creek Parkway and I-80?
I noticed late last year they started building something there and just recently saw the Porsche sign installed
Looked like it was announced last year that Woodhouse is bringing it back to the metro

Yeah, I saw this awhile back and kinda raised an eyebrow at it.

Totally agree. Compare DSM parking with other cities (Chicago, Minneapolis), and parking downtown is a breeze......and fairly inexpensive.
So true. All you have to do is compare ramp rates to what they are when you stay at a hotel in Miami, New York, Chicago etc. Parking can get up to $40 a night there. I understand they're trying to deter people, but whoa.
