It was bound to happen. There are just too many better ways to rent a movie today. Back in the VHS days you pretty much had one choice. Once high speed internet became the norm no one needs to leave their house to drive to the store to rent and then drive back to return.

I wonder how much money they made in late fees ?

Dish Network to close all Blockbuster stores, lay off 2,800 - Yahoo Finance

I probably rented NBA Jam on Super Nintendo 10 weeks in a row. Looking back, should have just purchased the damn game.

I used to love video store closures because before the internet you could get movies and NES games on the cheap. Now there is no real markdown of their inventory because it all ends up getting listed somewhere, or put on Ebay for $1000 for a box of 1000 movies... I don't have $1000 to throw that way even though you should be able to get store credit/buy back at Hastings of at least $3000 so I can buy good things... still... $1000... pass

I had fines all over town, every time I'd forget to return something I'd just go somewhere else. Moovies, Hollywood Video, Cub Foods way back in the day when they rented movies, That's Entertainment before they went porn heavy, the place in the Northern Lights area, Family Video, Hastings, you name it.

Interesting that you felt the need to qualify this. Very interesting...

I'm just waiting for redbox to get undercut by netflix. Netflix just needs to offer $1 a movie 24-hour streaming for new releases and i might never go to a redbox again.

Horrible management. They already had deals and contacts in place. Should of been rednox or netflix before those companies got a piece of the action.

Haha. This rambling stream of conscious thought reminded me of Milton's rambling diatribe about the squirrels:

Sorry, trombone. It just made me laugh.

It was always so embarrassing in high school to rent a movie from the "back room" at Family Video. You had to take that stupid orange square with the title on it up to the counter. Like anyone didn't know what you were actually doing.

Having a stand-alone retail outlet is the death knell of some corporations who get too aggressive

Krispy Kreme
Gateway Computers
Starbucks
Blockbuster

All have closed some or all their stand-alone retail buildings th last few years
