Global warming is getting my attention with the news that it may drive up the price of beer.

The price of beer is likely to rise in coming decades because climate change will hamper the production of a key grain needed for the brew — a scientist warns.

Jim Salinger, a climate scientist at New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, said climate change likely will cause a decline in the production of malting barley. Malting barley is a key ingredient of beer.

“It will mean either there will be pubs without beer or the cost of beer will go up,â€￾ Mr. Salinger told the Institute of Brewing and Distilling convention.

This will cause a quicker reaction to the "supposed" global warming that an increase in Gas Prices. There is nothing better to get people together than to threaten our alcohol intake.

The price of beer is threatened more by increased ethanol production as far as I'm concerned. With the rising cost of corn, farmers can make more money growing corn instead of hops and barley so they will switch. That will raise the price of barley and hops thus passing the costs onto the consumers.

Oh dear goodness...

Nothing like taking a real reason for the price increase, such as increased gas prices, and trying to increase the public scare more by saying "global warming is the cause of _____"

Increased gas prices - I'd buy. Global warming? :nah:

If there was such a thing as global warming we wouldn't be getting the cool temps we have had for the 2nd straight spring now. They are talking about snow in the forecast still!!!

What sucks is that we pay extra for good beer in Iowa already because of some idiot rules in place.

I think I speak for all college students in saying that I'm glad I won't have to deal with that. And since this is VEISHEA week you can get a 30 of keystone or Natty for $11.99 a hell of a deal if you ask me. Better go stock up just in case...
