I'm in my 30s, I'll generally take the automated option in most situations, particularly if the line is shorter or I can do it faster/more conveniently. But I almost always go into the bank for depositing or getting cash. Remote deposit for checks doesn't worry me at all, because I keep the physical check until I see the correct amount in my account.

As a mildly amusing aside, the branch manager of the GICU location in south Ames that got convicted of embezzlement was on a first name basis with my mom because of all the in person banking she'd do at that branch between my parents personal accounts and business. So much so, that a couple of times she would call in and he would keep the branch open for her after they were supposed to close. My sweet mother was so sad when that news came out. I thought more about how many times over the years a portion of her deposit was probably part of the cash that got embezzled.

I’m also in my 30’s and I would have never have even thought about using an ATM as an option and I’m honestly surprised your son even knew about it. Between venmo, Zelle, cash app, etc I haven’t gone to an ATM since I was a teenager.

Obv a unique situation with cash coming from dad (also bravo for helping your kid out) but I honestly wouldn’t have known depositing through an atm was available

Not sure how common this is, but my son ran into an unfortunate one the other day at BMO. He was between jobs and had just landed a new one, but he was short on money until he gets his first check, so I gave him $1200 (cash, a mistake in hindsight) and he went and deposited in the ATM (another mistake in hindsight).

At any rate, he put his card in, entered the amount, and then inserted the cash. It went clunk-clunk, and the machine basically blue screened, and when it came back up, nothing. Didn't acknowledge his transaction, didn't give his card back, nothing. He immediately entered the bank (luckily it was open) and started the process of filing a dispute, and I went in with him a couple days later and asked them to escalate the process if they could.

So far, all we've gotten from them is that the ATM servicer is investigating the matter and he should have an answer within 10 days. I get that this is within their legal timeframes, but it just sucks because you know damn well that within a day or two at the longest, they've had someone out to check it and know the balance is off. Meanwhile, I had to spot him another $800 so he could pay his rent on time.

Anyway, just venting and wondered if anyone else had a similar experience. I know for sure that he (nor I) will never deposit cash in an ATM again.
Took US Bank 9 months to clear up a clerk error and give me my $700 back.

I don't know how you people deposit your birthday/Christmas gifts from your boomer parents without checks.

Here's my funny bank story. I wrote a check to a church for $25 a few years ago. On Tuesday I get a notice from Veridan that my checking account is overdrawn and they are transferring money to savings. I look at my bank app and realize that the check cleared for $2500. I go straight to the bank where they fix it right there and tell me that the Federal Reserve would have caught it in a few days.

When I worked at the hy vee west in ames, there was a day that one of the atms there was loaded incorrectly. It dispensed both 5s and 20s. I believe 20s were loaded in both slots this day. So when a person would withdraw $10 they would get two 20 dollar bills instead of two 5 dollar bills. Customer service found out fairly quickly, disabled it, and called the owner.

Kids don't want to deal with actual people anymore...makes them nervous. :-|
It is true. Under 40s or so generally don't make eye contact when passing by on sidewalk. As if they are not in the presence of a fellow human! The kids at the local McDs will hide in the kitchen, leaving customers at the counter miffed and thinking WTF!.

I had this happen at Veridian once. They were closed at the time, so I went in Monday and it took about 20 minutes for them to check the cash collected vs deposit records. I don’t know how it takes more than that these days unless they aren’t collecting money out of them frequently.

Veridian is good about that stuff. Someone got ahold of my debit card and bought a couple grand worth of gift cards from a Walmart in Florida. The money was back in my account by the next morning.

Unfortunate situation and sorry to hear you're dealing with it, @Cyclonepride . Not much you can do except wait for them to make it right, I suppose.

What's interesting to me about this thread though reading the comments, is the willingness to use an ATM or not for a cash deposit like this seems to relate to the age of the poster. I'd bet it's like a lot of things that vary by generation. The older generation (sorry, making some assumptions about Pride and Cycsk who I've seen post on here and believe to be in their late 40s or 50s and older, more likely) trusts the teller and is willing to go inside. The older doesn't mind human interaction and is probably more comfortable with it. The younger (Pride's son) has grown up with convenience and technology, is used to it probably, and would rather "avoid human interaction" and probably has built up less of those social skills since they've always used the ATM instead of the teller, or buys their groceries online to avoid interaction, or insert other change here of the many our society has seen.

That's a real problem if you ask me for our long-term society and the social impact the younger generation's approach to business and life creates. We're raising more and more young people who avoid human interaction, probably have less social skills and the ability to talk things out. In brief, they'd rather live in a more digital and electronic world that isn't real. This may just be my "old man inside" speaking, but I worry about the effects of phones, buying off the app and all this stuff. It's fundamentally changing and has changed our society, and what the younger generation grows up seeing as normal, will become normal in many years from now as older generations die out and are replaced.

I also realize I'm very much Old Man Simpson yelling at clouds, here... Haha....

Guilty as charged. 60+

My last experience before I left Wells Fargo was when they cashed a check I had written for something like $220 for $720 and then argued with me about still having to pay the overdraft fees (check was clearly written out for two hundred twenty on both lines).

I've heard so many horror stories from friends and family about banks, never seem to hear anything bad about Credit Unions.

I've always used Credit Unions, whats the advantages of using a Bank?

Some banks have a national presence?
