there are many northern Minnesota lakes that are great fisheries (as noted already leech, kab, wini, red lakes, etc). Get a guide, at least for the first day even if you pull your own rig up. Well worth the few hundred for the knowledge they will share with you on the lake and what the fish are doing right now.

if you choose leech and want guide service or lodging we have gone for many years, stay at brindleys or trappers landing and hook up with outright Angling.

Well I'm at Leech right now near Bear Island. Lake is as low as it's been for some time. To windy today but asked some of locals here who said it's been pretty slow fishing. Should be able to get out tomorrow.

We've had some pretty good luck in the Iowa River right now. The rivers are getting shallow enough they are grouping up in the deeper holes making them easier to find.

I'm sure the Des Moines and Boone Rivers along with others in Iowa are similar

I have been catching quite a few fish on the Wapsi this year. Nothing huge, but the smallmouth population and the health of the fish has been very good. (Most of the bass have good color and some weight on them) I have just been fishing from shore, so kind of limited on where I can go. Caught a 10 pound cat on a spinnerbait the other day. Thought I had a great walleye on the ultralight for quite a while. Caught a couple 14 inch small mouth last week, which was also a battle.

Tough getting walleyes on Leech in the middle of the summer. But it’s a very good bass lake too...
We go to walker bay and hit the deep water with ice fishing jig heads with a minnow on it and just jig it off the bottom . I caught my biggest walleye there of 29” . I’ve had great luck at lake of the woods too but you can save yourself 4 hours of driving in my opinion and have some great fishing . Perch are also pretty darn good there too . Has anyone every caught any of the eel pouts there ? I’ve heard about it there but never caught any.

Has anyone been to Brushy Creek? My brother had heard good things about it, but has never fished it.
This time of year is tough there early spring and fall you’ll get into the walleye best . They drained it down to work on a boat ramp and it looked like the spillway on the lake side my son and I tried fishing below the damn and didn’t catch anything a few guys were casting out big plugs going for muskys they said they caught a few in the last few weeks .

How deep are the walleyes in Walker Bay? We've never tried that but it makes sense.

We caught a giant ellpout through ice years ago on Leech. It was disgusting.

A lot of the time it was 30-50 feet deep you have to have a good sensitive pole you barely feel them hit and then when you do get them on bring them up slow so you don’t blow out their gas bags.

I really wish they'd extend the length minnimum to 14 inches for smallies in Iowa. (I actually wish they'd make them all C&R but that'll never happen).

In most places in WI it's 14 inches and it really makes a difference. A day of wading around and seeing a lot of fish that size and bigger is fantastic.

I never keep anything in the Wapsi, but if I did a Smallmouth would be the last thing I would take to eat. I don't think they taste that great, and they are so much fun to catch.

A couple buddies and I usually make one trip a year to Mille Lacs Lake and fish on the big charter boat (can't think of the name of the place but its on the west side of the lake.)

They run three 4-hr trips a day. 8-12, 2-6, and 8-Midnight. We've done alright in the past.

Due to various issues, Lake Mille Lacs is currently closed for Walleye fishing. You are not allowed any live bait in the boat under 8 inches. Mille Lacs has turned into a bass hotspot and many bass anglers are regularly catching many Walleyes while in pursuit of bass. Many of the big launch boats that you are speaking of are just parked at the dock.

Mille Lacs is currently not a Walleye fishing destination.

I would suggest you contact the folks up at Wishbone Resort on Cass Lake. The owners are originally from Cedar Rapids. The resort is above par for resorts in Minnesota. Their cabins are very well kept and clean and they have very good rental boats. They generally start their Fall rates the last week of August.

Cass Lake is very fishable as it has an island in the center of it that helps break-up the wind and waves so that you have very few "blow" days. You can also run over to Pike Bay or Lake Andrusia. Cass Lake has a very healthy Walleye, Yellow Perch and Musky population.

There is a newer Indian casino in Cass Lake, MN if you want to stretch your legs at night. Bemidji is a very short drive away if you need additional services, hospital, Target, Walmart, auto parts and repair shops. Also, you are a short drive from Walker, MN if you want to go to Reed's Sporting Goods or the other touristy attractions.

Yeah, I wasn't aware of that going on. It's been a couple years since we were there.

We've got a few people going up to Leech soon and want to try for some deep water walleyes. Care to share where in Walker Bay have you found them?

Thanks for the information. It is looking like we will not be going to Canada this year either because of some other issues.

On a typical day, how many fish would one person catch on Cass Lake? The web site that I looked at talked about ANDRUSIA LAKE as a really good walleye lake. Have you had good luck there? Thanks for any help. Starting to get to itch to go fishing.

Headed to Colorado at the end of the month for a ice fishing tournament in the mountains. I haven’t been out in Iowa yet but we need to go this weekend to make sure everything is in order. Probably just stay local, Ada Hayden or somewhere nearby.

When I was a kid the backwaters of the Mississippi were super. Shallow and safe and good fishing. Ferryville was outstanding.
