Thank you all for the feedback, even the "hooker in the trunk" theory. I'll probably have to bite the bullet and take it to a mechanic.

It is most likely a broken clip or retainer for the brake shoes. I don't know anything about how Honda brakes are set up, but the fact that you can stop it by stepping on the brakes indicate that something is loose in the pads. Generally the brake calipers hold the shoes right up against the disk. Also, make sure you do not have a wheel loose.

I was reading someof these helpful responses to hubby. He says the knocking is a sure sign that your warranty just expired. That'll be $2500...we take paypal...:ptongue:

Where do you live at? You could bring it to me and I could check it out for ya if you're in the Waukee/Central Iowa area. Brakes are about the easiest car maintenance out there.

Car guys. What is a reasonable price to pay for rear brake and rotary replacement? 2007 Dodge Caliber. Also any recommendations onot shops in the Waukee or West Des Moines area? Stivers gave me a $275 quote

That sounds reasonable to me. You might find it slightly cheaper but not much. Only way to save a lot would be to do it yourself but your time is worth something too.

Go to heartland tire in waukee. It's on Hickman right across from fareway. Whatever price they quote will be a good price and work is top notch.

Or do it yourself. Not very hard and saves a bunch.

Wheel bearing is more of a constant grinding sound than an intermittent knocking. An easy way to tell is to swerve back and forth in your lane at highway speed. If it gets worse as you're swerving, it's most likely a wheel bearing.
