Okay, since we keep hearing from the Mac apologists about how ISU can't afford to pay our head or assistant football coaches competitive salaries, I decided to do some digging.

I found some interesting numbers. First of all we know Mac's current salary is $1.1 million and that he ranks in the middle of the Big XII conference for head coaches. Here's how he stacks up with some other coaches from around the country:

SEC

-Les Miles, LSU: $1.25 million
-Steve Spurrier, S.Carolina: $1.25 million
-Ed Orgeron, Miss.: $1.00 million
-Sylvester Croom, Miss. St.: $900,000
-Rich Brooks, Kentucky: $750,000

Pac 10

-Karl Dorrell, UCLA: $800,000
-Walt Harris, Stanford: $600,000
-Bill Doba, Wash. St.: $500,000
-Dirk Koetter, ASU: $950,000
-Mike Riley, Oregon St.: $800,000
-Mike Stoops, Arizona: $800,000

I'd say Mac's salary compares very favorably with all of the above coaches' salaries. I mean, Mac's not even on the same planet as Spurrier when it comes to coaching yet he only makes $150,000 less than the old ball coach. The same's true for Les Miles who coaches one of the premier football programs in the country at LSU.
Mac's making more than over half the Pac Ten coaches including Mike Riley whose OSU team just knocked off USC.

But let's go further. How about our top assistants?:

-John Skladany: $177,000
-Barney Cotton: $173,550
-Tony Alford: $170,000

So how do they stack up with other assistants? Well, Norm Parker and Ken O'Keefe at Iowa both make $190,890 as DC and OC respectively; really not much more than what Cotton and Skladany make. And both have achieved much greater success as well with Iowa making serious runs at Big Ten championships, and appearing in and winning New Years Day bowl games while they've been coaches. Note: Barney Cotton made only $130,000 as OC at Nebraska.

How about a team comparison with say Clemson and ISU?

Clemson

Tommy Bowden: $1.1 million (hey, same as Mac!)
Rob Spence (OC): $175,000
Vic Koenning (DC): $175,000

So, we pay our head coach and top two coordinators combined almost exactly what Clemson pays theirs. Now this is Clemson, mind you, a school rich in football tradition with great fan support, currently competing for the top spot in the ACC Atlantic Division and ranked #19 in the polls.

So, I think this puts to rest the notion that ISU doesn't pay their football coaches competive salaries and isn't or wouldn't be able to attract and retain top assistants because we don't pay them anything. These numbers say otherwise.

I'm not sure how all this works...yet I know Mac's base is $450k, there is other stuff there that gets him up to the $1.1 million. Could it be the salaries you listed are the base...and they actually make more?

Again, I'm not sure how that stuff works...each publication shows salaries differently.

The site where I got much of this information, including Spurrier's salary had Ferentz listed at $2.85 million, which I think is the total package for his contract. All salaries listed included things like shoe deals, radio/TV, speaking engagements, etc.

Some of the coaches listed have incentives specifically tied to their contracts based on team performance, classroom performance, etc. I didn't include those for the Pac Ten or SEC coaches listed who have these incentives in their contracts. Remember, many of those types of incentives are for things like earning trips to BCS bowls, national championship games, and undefeated seasons. So they won't be realized for most of these schools.

Mac's $1.1 million refers to his base plus things like Nike deal, and radio/TV shows, etc. That number does not include performance incentives. I don't know what performance incentives Mac has tied to his contract.

I don't know if you have all the incentive pay for all these other head coaches, but if they are right, you make a solid point. The notion that ISU is wholely unattractive as a coaching job is complete BS. (BTW,The Iowa head Asst. coaches should be looking for raises based on their performance compared to the guys to the west.)

Maybe our perception of the situation is being skewwed by the salary KF pulls in, but $1,100,000.00 still looks like a lot of money to the working stiffs that are buying ISU football tickets.

Not a fair judgement. This is Spurriers 2 year at South Carolina not his 12th. In 3 years he will be making 2.5, guaranteed. Same as Miles, although im not overly impressed with him to be honest. They have more talent than any other team in the SEC.

Good job on the research, it had to take a lot of time and effort. It is also easy to follow your thoughts. I personally don't like the title though because using terms like mac apologist and mac basher just seem to divide people and distract from the point you are trying to make.

As much as Dan is getting paid is as much as we can pay a coach. When we get a new coach he is going to be making 400K his first 3 years. Spurrier makes 1.2 mil. Big differences

and how many years as a head coach has Spurrier had? When Mac was hired he had a fairly low salary, but he was an unproven asst. coach. When SC hired Spurrier he was a proven coach. Not sure if Mac is there yet after 12 years.

yeah but u cant pay a guy who hasnt done anything for your school 2 mil out of the gate. 1.2 is still very respectable. Spurrier gets raise in a year or two.

I think you guys are missing the point that Klubber has made. Outlining all coaches and salaries to make comparisons between ISU and anyone is one thing, but the ultimate comparison to answer the question "Can ISU be attractive to coaching talent, and be a competitive football program, at the current price point?". Klubber has answered the question "yes".

So what if we probably can't afford Spurrier or Ferentz to steal them from their current contracts to pay them more then they will likely be paid in their contract renewals. ISU needs someone new and whoever it is can step into the position and work with the budget given. Is that budget competitive? Looking at Clemson, a program with a coach in his 8th year (so he's likely already undergone one or possibly two raises since his initial hire), a similar assistant coach pay strucure to our current model, I agree with Klubber. ISU should be able to compete.

Great info- backs what I have said all along-ISU can attract and support a "New head Coach" of caliber and reputation. It's too bad that 1.1 million currently hasn't got is something to cheer about.

To get a coach that most fans will be happy with......in the league of names that have been posted around this site, would probably take about what Mac is making now, with increases in the future from that point upward. I'm not sure how that fits with Pollard's master plan, but it certainly adds to the total number needed.
