If Nelson would have come back, then they would have had an argument.
lol no. they would be ok, AJ is very talented when the old conservative coach allows him to play. But it doesn't really matter when you have very little talent at DT and even less at LB. Don't even get me started on the WRs and QB on the other side of the ball.

Would be OK? Two future NFL draft picks including a first rounder would be OK? LOL.

Crazy that Iowa has “very little talent at DT” when Alabama committed recruiting violations to try and flip one of Iowa’s DTs. I guess Phil Parker will just cobble together another top 25 defense despite such a severe lack of talent- he must be one helluva coach.

Easier in the offense optional big ten to consistently have a top 25 defense.

Here are Nelson's weaknesses:

  • Lacks diversity of attack with his rush plan
  • Rush counters are fairly basic at this point
  • Inconsistent conversion of speed to power at top of the rush
  • Below-average hand strength to pummel the punch
  • Below-average ability to bend the edge and flatten to quarterback
  • Plays too narrow at point of attack
  • Needs to play with better bend into engagement
  • Loses ground when setting the edge against strength
  • Will get stuck on blocks for too long
So yeah, just ok.

Strengths
  • NFL caliber frame with long arms and room for more mass
  • Game engine is tuned up
  • Explodes out of his stance as upfield rusher
  • Rangy to finish once he gets a sniff inside the pocket
  • Additional play strength should allow him to level up as a rusher
  • Initial quickness to cross-face blocker on back side
  • Good athlete with adequate change of direction
  • Shows flashes of quick punch and discard talent
  • Reliable arm-over to exploit block-leaners.

yeah when I read his strengths and weaknesses obviously he has potential. We've seen players get better after they leave Iowa, and he could be one of them. But was he dominant in college football? He may have had some good games but to say they would be one of the best DE combos in the country is silly IMO. AJ has a ton of potential, it will be interesting to see if KF actually plays him more this year.
