ISU LEADS NCAA WRESTLING AFTER FIRST ROUND

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Iowa State went 9-1 Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Scottrade Center, propelling the Cyclones into first place in the team race after the initial session. ISU has 25 points, Iowa is second with 22 points, followed by Ohio State with 17 ½ points. Boise State and Nebraska are tied for fourth with 15 points.
“It was a good round because we were the aggressors,†Iowa State head coach Cael Sanderson said. “A good first round gets you nothing. I’ve told the guys that this is the way we have to be again tonight. This tournament is a journey and we have a long way to go.â€
Cyclone sophomore 125-pounder Tyler Clark used a flurry of two-point nearfall maneuvers to secure himself a second round match this evening. Clark dominated Navy’s Prescott Garner by major decision, 19-5. The ninth-seeded Clark was close to securing the technical fall in the closing seconds of the third period as he found himself unable to finish a deep shot against the Navy wrestler. Clark’s second round opponent is Rollie Peterkin of Penn, who is seeded eighth.
Nick Fanthorpe, a returning All-American for ISU at 133 pounds, scored a technical fall over Cal-State Fullerton’s TJ Dillashaw, 19-4 (7:00). Fanthorpe was too much for the Fullerton wrestler on his feet, notching seven takedowns during the first-round match. Fanthorpe, the seven seed, advances to face Penn State’s tenth-seeded Jake Strayer in the second round.
Sixth-seeded Iowa Stater Nick Gallick edged Northwestern’s Keith Sulzer in 141-pound first-round action by decision, 4-2. Gallick, a returning All-American, advances to the second round to wrestle Lehigh’s Seth Ciasulli.
ISU’s 149-pounder Mitch Mueller was able to get a little payback in his first-round match against Boise State’s Jason Chamberlain. Chamberlain edged Mueller in quadruple overtime at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, 4-2 (SV2). Mueller took down the Bronco twice Thursday to win by decision, 5-2. Mueller will wrestle fourth-seeded Lance Palmer of Ohio State.
At 157 pounds, Iowa State’s Cyler Sanderson came up big in his first-round match with the most points possible. Sanderson stuck Northern Illinois’s Bryan Deutsch in 4:41. Sanderson only led 5-4 heading into the second period. The returning ISU All-American will be looking for payback as he faces Boise State’s Adam Hall in second-round action. Hall edged Sanderson at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, 3-2.
ISU’s Jon Reader will continue his hunt to become a two-time All-American, after major-decisioning Pitt’s Ethan Headlee, 10-2. The No. 8-seeded Reader will face Dan Vallimont of Penn State this evening.
Iowa State 174-pounder Duke Burk scored a first-round upset for the Cyclone effort by knocking off 12th-seed Alton Lucas of Hofstra. Lucas is a returning All-American for the Pride. Burk advances for a rematch with Missouri’s Raymond Jordan. Burk dropped a decision to the Tiger 6-1 earlier this season.
Iowa State dropped its only match of the morning when redshirt freshman Jerome Ward missed on upsetting No. 4 Kirk Smith of Boise State. The match was tied 1-1 in the final 20 seconds but Ward was unable to stop a Bronco takedown and fell by decision, 3-1. Ward faces Big 12 foe Dorian Henderson of Missouri in consolation action. Ward beat Henderson by decision, 5-2, earlier this season.
Returning two-time NCAA finalist Jake Varner proved to be too much for his first-round opponent, Daniel Bruce of Virginia Tech. Second-seeded Varner dropped the Hokie wrestler by technical fall, 17-2 (7:00). Varner’s second round opponent is Purdue’s Logan Brown.
No. 1 seed David Zabriskie needed overtime to put away his much larger opponent from East Stroudsburg, Christopher Birchler. Zabriskie wrangled in Birchler’s legs in the first sudden victory period to win 6-4 (SV). Zabriskie will wrestle West Virginia’s Dustin Rogers in second round action.

That's prettty much just a one match difference, isn't it?

The three point lead after one is nice but we have to show up in the later rounds. 1st went about as good as we could hope though.

A standard bracket will go from 32 >>16>>8>>4>>2>>Champ.
A pigtail match is what happens when there are more than 32 wrestlers.
Basically, 1 or 2 wrestlers need to win to get into the round of 32.

    hopefully that helps.

I think there are 33 wrestlers at each weight.
The 1 pigtail match (to get to 32) is a random draw.
The pigtail matches were the first matches of the day. So there will be no more.

What really helped Iowa was the number of pins. That was crazy.

Championships are won and lost in the wrestlebacks. After losing, you have to come back and get some bonus points. Those are the teams that win the team championship.

Looks like if things go according to seed, this won't last long. So let's hope we get some upsets.
