A Few Thoughts From Last Week

1. People have asked what the new wrestling room was like at Carver? I don't know, Iowa wouldn't let anyone from ISU in to see their $35,000,000 building so I can't tell you. This weekend was the only time I have ever been to a weigh-in where it wasn't held in the wrestling room or a locker room, outside of big tournaments where it's in a space big enough to accommodate the athletes like the NCAA's. Saturday, it was in a concrete hallway.

2. Yes, I really did have 3 oranges with me at Carver just in case.

3. I really like Cody Chittum. He is one of the most enjoyable people to talk to on the team, and he has a heart of gold. If you get a chance to speak with him, do it.

4. Beer sales at Carver-what could go wrong? The language directed towards our bench, not just the coaches, but the athletes, was over the top in my opinion. I'm marking it up to the intensity of the rivalry, but the alcohol just took it to another level. I understand heckling and yelling at coaches, and I've apologized already to Chris Perry for all the things I said to him in the past, but the personal attacks on athletes are a bit much.

5. It might be sour grapes, and I know officiating is a tough job and I would never want to do it, but the product we all saw on the mat made me scratch my head a few times. I'll leave it at that.

6. We mentioned this during our broadcast, but I'll touch on it again. I understand gamesmanship, and I know the history of Hayden Fry and the pink locker room, but if Iowa was trying to make the locker and warm up space as unaccommodating as possible, mission accomplished.

7. We were assigned an armed uniformed police officer to escort the team to weigh-ins and to and from the tunnel. I forgot his name, and I apologize for that, but he was absolutely great. Very professional and a kind man. Thumbs up and way to go to him.

8. Iowa has a great atmosphere for wrestling. I have to give them their dues. Carver is electric.

9. Seriously, wouldn't you love to have heard the conversation with Nelson and Arnold when they were told that they were sitting?

10. Iowa not shaking hands after the meet? Cmon.

11. ISU has a bunch of tough kids on this team. There were guys that were beat up and wanted to go on Saturday and Coach Dresser made the decision to sit them. I love this coaching staff and this team.

12. This team will be better in March than they are in November.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Blood Round goes great with turkey I am told.

I have a standing bet with a former neighbor…six pack of beer for the Vikings vs Bears. He just delivered my winning via Blood Round. Cheers.
