How does this work then? Is he a senior this year and will be here next fall? Or he is enrolling second semester?

The timing is off or am I off base?

Iowa
Yep against Saunders in freestyle
Kind of an “extra” match since Echemendia is graduated. I think we will see just how good is really is in that match. His folk style still needs a lot of work but this is a huge pickup for the coaching staff. This kid is legit! He should be the 149 following Degen’s graduation.

Great addition to the 2019 class.

See Cody Goodwin’s article at the Des Moines Register for more information:

Wrestling: Anthony Echemendia, national champ from Arizona, signs with Iowa State

The Iowa State wrestling program received a late addition to its 2019 recruiting class on Friday.

Anthony Echemendia, a 2019 graduate of Sunnyside High School in Tucson, Arizona, signed with the Cyclones on Friday. He made the announcement official on Twitter. He selected Iowa State over Penn State, Illinois, Iowa, and Arizona State. He projects around 141/149 pounds.

"Signing time. Very excited to represent Iowa State wrestling. Let's go cyclones," Echemendia wrote.

"Thank you very much to this great country for giving me this opportunity, I still cannot believe what is happening in my life, thank you very much to all the people who have had to do with this. My parents in Cuba are very proud of me," he wrote in a separate tweet. ...

... In July, he won both the freestyle and Greco-Roman titles at the Junior National Championships. He went 14-0 between both tournaments, and outscored his opponents by a combined 139-10. ...

It is impossible for me to not recall, and mention, Frank Santana, the young, charismatic, Cuban-born, Cyclone wrestler and leader of our breakout group (assisting long-time Assistant Coach Les Anderson) — when I attended Cyclone wrestling camp eons ago.

That’s no longer clear according to the Register’s article:

... Echemendia was also slated to compete at Flowrestling's "Who's Number One" showcase event in Iowa City next month.

It remains to be seen if he will still compete next month — Echemendia is expected to join Iowa State as soon as next week — but he will surely be a welcomed addition to a Cyclone team that's expected to continue its rise during the 2019-20 season.
