Never played HS SB? Is that common amongst the really good players? Seems unusual to me.
It's starting to be more and more common. You aren't getting recruited playing high school ball, all efforts are put into the club scene.

Haven't heard about it much in regards to softball. Have heard about it happening more in volleyball where they just play club instead of High School.

Iowa is also a little different as it is one of the few states (maybe only?) that play High School in the summer right when I'm sure the best club competitions are going on.

This is definitely part of it but high level club ball starts in early spring and goes through fall. You are starting to see more and more of it.

It's similar to VB. College softball coaches don't rely much on HS games as their season is in full swing and assistant coaches/recruiting budgets are limited. They rely more on the showcase tournaments in the summer. Puts a lot more teams and talent in one place after their season is complete.
