Theory of a Deadman and 10 Years announced, but at Hoyt (wtf?).

Highly Suspect and Dead Poet Society at Val Air.

This year is like the past 10 years combined for local Hard Rock shows.

Lots of their shows have a 4 pack deal. If you type 24SUMMER into the ticket drop down box you can get 4 tickets for 80 bucks.

For some of the events like 30 Seconds to Mars, that's a deal.

Last night's review...

Return to Dust - ehh, pretty damn generic.

Tigercub - a little too soft but the accent and melodies were decent.

Chevelle - Damn can they still put on a great show. While most of their great songs are 10+ years old, they have a nearly complete setlist of great 20's hard rock songs. Lighting was absolutely intense, guessing 50 people had seizures 30 seconds into the show.

Again, I cannot stress enough how amazing the acoustics are in Waukee's Vibrant Music Hall (Live Nations owned). It's bar far the best venue I've been to in a 100 mile radius for hard rock. ADA section this time was also great - about 30 feet from stage attached to the side of the sound mixers on a raised elevation to see over the crowd (us ADA peeps obviously sit the whole show). I've seen probably 6-8 hard rock shows there in the 18 months it's been open and have a ton more booked. Puts the Val Air and 6 Flags (or whatever it's called) sound to shame.

I was at Sunday's show in Omaha. Agree Chevelle is just so damn good live, it's probably been 8 years since I saw them last and it brought back some great memories. I was surprised by Tigercub, I had thrown them on Spotify earlier in the week while working and nothing moved me enough to stop my work and look at the name of the song, but live I thought their music was better, I'll have to go back again and see if I missed something.

It's been a long time since I've seen Chevelle live but I thought Pete's voice is showing his age a little. I can't believe he's made it this long though. Love that venue though.

I was expecting some loss in vocals but he was on his A game last night. A few spots where it wasn't quite as deep or intense as in the past, but overall was very surprised.

Counting Crows did a great job last night in Waukee. Vibrant music hall is a nice facility. Plenty of staff, bathrooms, and bars.

I was there last night. It was definitely the most packed that I’ve seen it. You could easily purchase water. There were several free water stations but the one that was centrally located was over crowded. Long lines everywhere. That said, we still had a good time.

That's good to hear. I always take social media comments with a grain of salt but it was more than just one or two people complaining so I was curious

What was your experience getting in and leaving? We probably spent 4 hours yesterday trying to park and then leave the grounds? Maybe ran into 1 person trying direct traffic each time. Music was good but seemed insanely unorganized to me compared to every other festival I’ve been to

Took forever to get in. I would say it was about 2 hrs to park. I had stuff to do this morning so we left about 2 songs early from Hozier and got right out. I assume if we stayed til the end it would have been a mess. I’ve been the past couple years and it feels like they have staffed it with the same number of people even though the crowd is much bigger. Hopefully they adjust accordingly in the future.

Why are people parking in the main lot? Just go a little further into town and it's easy to get in and out.

I haven't been there since pre-pandemic years but the musical acts they've been getting since then are terrible compared to the early days .

I saw Ray LaMontagne, Alt-J, Band of Horses, The Head and the Heart, and Gary Clark Jr all within the first couple years.

Also,,when did they put in the giant concrete slab ? Nothing like standing on concrete for hours at a time.

I was just asking a girlfriend if we should just forego our parking pass for this afternoon (we just did today as a one-day) and take the shuttle, and she said the shuttles were HOURS late. So I think parking is still the way to do it.

They sold about 4k too many tickets. We had to leave Hozier early to try to beat traffic.

This is all so bananas to me. I haven't gone since Sturgill was there in 2018; we were supposed to go to the 2020 show that got moved to 2021, but didn't because there was a big COVID outbreak at the time. It was always so small and comfortable back then.

Gary Clark Jr was one of the best live performances I've ever seen, and I loved Alt-J. I think every year they have someone for whom I'm really excited; this year it's Vampire Weekend and Charley Crockett. Super bummed I missed Orville Peck last night, his new stuff is just as fantastic as the old. There's good stuff each year, and then there's always some stuff I don't like as much - but that's the draw of it, it's got something for everyone.

I'm guessing the concrete slab is just due to how gross and muddy it would get on rainy years. I remember the Alt-J day when it just poured through Shakey Graves and Dwight Yoakum.
