I'm not pumping the brakes. I have way too much of a man crush on Buxton.

I love Buxton, and if he stays healthy he could be the MVP. But I'd have to say that Ohtani is the most talented. Pitching and hitting is hard to beat in terms of "talent".

Puckett was a fabulous player. He was a really smart baseball player. He never threw to the wrong base, never made any base running blunders, excellent fielder and a scary hitter.

Buxton is awesome.... now he just needs some consistency with staying on the field. No doubt he is scary good when healthy.

Now do the exact same thing, except expand last year's Buxton stats to the number of games Trout played vs the number he did. I think you would be surprised by the results.
First I'd be REALLY surprised because Buxton actually managed to play MORE games than Trout for the second time in their overlapping careers (2017 is the other - 140 v. 114).

162 game career splits...
1650895183199.png
Trout:
1650895144946.png
Buxton:
1650895168668.png

Looking specifically at 2021, which is really kind of a pointless endeavor given the small sample size for both players... but you asked regardless.

'162 Game Expanded '21' Buxton (61 games played):
PA: 675 AB: 624 R: 133 H: 191 2B: 61 3B: 0 HR: 50 RBI: 85 SB: 24 CS: 3 BB: 35 SO: 165

'162 Game Expanded '21' Trout (36 games played):
PA: 657 AB: 527 R: 104 H: 176 2B: 36 3B: 5 HR: 36 RBI: 81 SB: 9 CS: 0 BB: 122 SO: 185

So IF Buxton managed to keep the pace he was at last year for a 162 game season (140 games is the most he's ever played in, he 'averages' 71) he'd have put up superior stats than Trout did (exceptions being - BA, BB, and likely OBP). On the other hand Trout 'averages' 117 games played.

I really was in the Buxton camp, but y'all are pushing him further and further down the ranks for me based solely on the fact the guy can't seem to stay in the lineup.

Weird hill to die on. Who do you root for in the majors?

Look at just Buxton's stats for last year expanded. 50. 50 home runs. That would have been an absolutely insane year. The last people to do that are David Ortiz and Ryan Howard, and add to that he is a platinum gold glove in center. You don't say see ya to that potential.

He has 6 home runs this year in 10 games. He could get to 50 home runs while just playing 84 more games this season based on his rate right now. That is some absolutely insane numbers.

Die hard Twins fan. They're really the only professional team in any sport I follow with interest.

I'm just not ready to drink the 'Buxton is the best player in MLB' Kool-Aid until he either: 1) stays healthy or 2) wins in the post season.

I guess if that is a 'weird hill to die on' so be it.

He arguably had better stats in April last year - he didn't maintain that pace and he didn't play in 1/2 of the Twins games. The projections you make on minute sample sizes are amusing.

Health issue I can understand. The post-season thing I cannot.
