Chiefs linebacker room isn't that talented. He has a shot to make it. Couple high draft picks but he can easily make the second team, in my biased but informed opinion.

Stop me if this sounds familiar, but apparently Wright was terrible on kickoffs, and barely generated any touchbacks last year. They even had their punter handing kickoffs for a while before he started to deal with hamstring tightness.
Seems like an odd reason to axe an accurate field goal kicker with a decent leg. I'd have to assume NFL teams could carry multiple kickers to handle different roles, similar to college. Happy to see Mevis will get a shot though, anyway!
Mevis did pretty well at kickoffs last year.
I was doing a little reading on this and there were a lot of comments about his inability to get kickoffs through and even into the endzone (sound familiar?). He only had 6 touchbacks on 31 kickoffs.
Pretty much every NFL team can only afford to carry two kicking specialists. One needs to be elite at place kicking, one needs to be elite at punting and one of those two needs to be elite at kickoffs. Both players need to be at least good in all three specialties since they back each other up. If the feeling was that his kickoffs made him unacceptable as even a backup at kickoff duties he's not going to be good for an NFL team.
EDIT: I guess I should have refreshed before posting this. BMWallace covered most of this.
I will add that with half the number of roster spots as a college team carrying more than the two kicking specialists can be a pretty costly option. With only 53, roster spots are valuable.

I think most NFL teams hoard active roster spots like gold. If they could find a guy who could kick fgs, punt, and kick off all at a high level, he would be worth all the money they could throw at him just because it would allow them to carry an extra guy at another position.
I'm not sure they could afford to have one guy doing all three without a reliable back up at the positions, but your point is correct - roster spots are so very valuable.

He lost the kickoff job to their punter (9 TB in 21 KO) but he started to suffer overuse injuries. Being a punter for the Jags is a full time job.
Also apparently Wright replaced Josh Lambo as PK in the 4th game. Lambo was 0-3 on FG but 7 of 10 on getting touchbacks on kickoffs. So 62 kickoffs, Wright kicked exactly half of them.

Much better than only 31 kickoffs but 62 is still just 3.6 per game. One kickoff per game is mandatory so an average of 2.6 scores per game? Ouch. Might be a little higher if onside kicks aren’t included in the 61 season total but I can’t imagine they were close enough in score for many onside kicks. 12 passing TDs, 13 Rushing TDs, 1 K Return TD. That's it. Well and then 21 FGs.
That's how you get ranked as the 32nd (out of 32) Offense in the NFL. By scoring 253 points in a 17 game season.

Semi-related, but one of my favorite videos from last year was Belichick being asked about whether using a roster spot on a long snapper is worth giving up an extra position player. Bill goes on for 10 minutes talking about how views on the role of long snapping have changed in his time coaching.
Sundays are about to get a lot more fun. The Cyclones in the NFL thread this fall will legit be necessary just to keep up with all of them now. So awesome.
