I will be surprised if Missouri is the first game. I think the early schedule will probably go

11/9 or 11/10 Maui campus game
Sometime between 11/12 and 11/15 - Non Con bum
11/19 - 11/21 - Maui games
11/25 - Non Con bum

I would bet Missouri shows up in the 11/28 - 12/1 time frame sort of like Cincy in 2016.

Based on recent history we already know Iowa most likely will fall on 12/6, another non con bum on 12/9 and Drake on 12/15.
I could definitely be wrong, but for some reason I thought it was a foregone conclusion that we would open the season with Missouri again?

  • Jim Maui Invitational: We'd play 3 of the following:
-Arizona
-Auburn (currently projected a 3 seed)
-Duke
-Gonzaga
-Illinois
-San Diego State
-Xavier

That might be an interesting field depending upon what happens with the FBI investigation and sanctions.

Arizona and Auburn are hip-deep in paying for players and Illinois hired the guy from Okie State who was involved in it there.

Re: Maui & campus games — I'm under impression none of the field of 8 will take part in the campus/mainland portion, Chamindade is part of that (not sure of other teams involved). Chaminade will be part of the official field only in odd-numbered years.

I could be incorrect, but I don't think ISU plays on-campus associated with MJM.

Hopefully winnable match up for SEC/Big12 (still hate that event)

I like B12/SEC. I'd favor moving it into early December instead of late-January, partway through conference season. But that presents a scheduling conundrum: Slotting 20 teams with varied early-season tournaments schedules and non-conference rivalry games.

As it is now, the two leagues can arrange conference schedules and have that one-day showcase. If it's moved to pre-conference period, we could end up like the ill-conceived Big 12/Pac-(then)10 Challenge slate, which was spread over the course of like a month.

How is Missouri supposed to be?

I'm assuming Michael Porter Jr. will go pro, does Jontay have a chance to leave? I have watched Tilmon play a couple times this year and have been impressed. Not really sure what their backcourt will look like however
MPJ will be gone...expect the rest of the team to be back minus the 2 seniors and a grad. They currently have 2 coming in, one is the #101 player nationally (per 247), the other is #379 (again per 247), both guards. They will be pretty good in the paint...lots of height.

I don't know if Prohm would play them much, and I don't know if guys will be redshirted or not, but a couple sub-200 games would be a great time to work people in who otherwise aren't in the 7 or 8. Few (me) want to go watch blowouts, but if you can get the youngins 10-20 playing against college kids that's a good thing. And every game can't be a challenge. If you want to climb peak after peak, you've got to catch your breath in the valleys.

One thing for next year's calendar---

The NCAA approved moving up the first game date to the Tuesday of the week its currently in (for 2018, that's November 6). My guess is pretty much everybody will play that opening Tuesday.

Exactly. I know we'll endure a few losses early on but we'll sure as heck be battle tested.

I think previous appearance at Maui was 1990 .... so I agree, getting a spot in that tournament in itself is going to balance most of the cupcake-ish games, even if they're sub-200 — and we seem to get plenty of those most seasons, regardless.

It's really going to be something to see how Arizona fills out a roster. 4 graduating seniors and 3 underclassmen turning pro + might have some transfers with the cloud over the program.

What are they bringing in? Chase Jeter, the Duke transfer, but other than that currently, zero 2018 commits.

Arizona is going to have a really hard time next year. As you mentioned, you have 7 people leaving the program, leaving only 3-5 players on the team left. With the cloud over Arizona, and Millers issues a couple weeks ago, all of their Basketball recruits coming in for next years team all de-committed.

I think it's valuable to schedule the extra game, which Prohm has not done the last couple years. Not sure his theory with it. Looked it up, I don't think Fred did either. Most teams schedule 13 non con, Iowa St has had just 12.

Last week I would have said it's critical to have that as an auto win. Just because if a team gets to 20-21 wins overall, their chances of making the tournament go up exponentially. However, after the selection committee took a few lower win teams over teams that had that magical 20-22 wins, maybe it's not as important.

That said, the Big 12 consistently has a way of being one of the highest rated conferences in the country. So if Iowa St can get 9 wins in conference, and 20 overall, I would put them at 75% to get in. That's 11 wins in the non con. Can they go 11-2? Makes that Maui swing game very important, either 1-2 or 2-1.
