Tornado sirens have now gone off twice in Urbandale.

I heard on the news that towns are going to start using the sirens for thunderstorm warnings now also, not just tornados. I am not sure Polk county was under a tornado warning or not.

Your right, no tornado warnings. My weather radio only showed thunderstorm warnings.

Question for the weather gurus. The NWS originally said that the worst storms will be this afternoon.

Since this storm was so powerful, will it reduce the impact of the storms now forming in NW Iowa?

The way I heard it on WHO radio was that once the winds hit 70 MPH, it'll trip off the sirens. I can understand wanting to alert those who work outside about the incoming weather (that's the purpose of the sirens), but it will get real old, real quick if we have to take shelter at work everytime it get's a little windy

Except 70 MPH is not "a little wind"...

Wow big hail falling right 10 miles north of Fort Dodge. A bit bigger than quarter sized.

Absolutely. No need to induce unneeded panic.

I would think that the dark as night clouds rolling in would be sufficient to tell people to find shelter immediately. Once I'm in my shelter of choice, I'd like to know if there's a tornado or not within the vicinity, especially if I don't have access to a radio or TV.

Better not leave out UNI grads then. About 80% of them are closet hawk fans anyway. It is that proximity retardation effect on them. Iowa City is a black hole.
