What do you think of Caitlin Clark?

Field report. Caitlin Clark has a real national profile amongst sports fans. I've been living in a southern state for about 9 years now. There's a group of other guys in my neighborhood that talk sports. They all know I'm an Iowa/Iowa State fan (I know I know, but I attended both schools). In...

Gift for 1 year old nephew

Ha, yeah that was basically the same as one of the toys we had to toss. Why, why, why does it make sense to play a song over and over for minutes at a time from one key press!?

Gift for 1 year old nephew

They key feature you are looking for is a continuous play mode that the child can turn on. Most of the cheap electronic song toys, the kids hits a button and the toy plays an annoying kids song once. The ones you want to get are the are the toys that "turn on" and just keep playing forever (or...

    Merged Covid Megathread

As of today, 216,784 Americans have died of Coronavirus, in an epidemic that shows no signs of being brought under control. It appears inevitable that we will reach >300k dead, or one in every one thousand Americans having succumbed to this virus. Currently the United States is the third worst...

    ISU's academic rankings decline continues

Your daughter sounds awesome, and the kind of person R1 schools fight to keep, frankly. It's sad but true, almost all of these types of people could walk out the door and make significantly more money tomorrow. But having been in both camps, there are real plusses to being a faculty -- you get...

    ISU's academic rankings decline continues

What I've heard (yes this is hearsay) is that AAU is not discounting USDA (or other ag funding) anymore. This is a huge win but it does not solve the real problem. The average USDA grant is 1/4th the size of the average NIH grant. And the key AAU criterion that sunk UNL was $$$ federal grants.

    ISU's academic rankings decline continues

No! I have no special info, I know nothing more than you do. I can just read the signs, the same as everyone else worried about ISU AAU status long-term. Nothing will happen in the next year or three, but... what other peer Unis are maintaining AAU status without a Med school? And where do they...

    ISU's academic rankings decline continues

Good question! Clearly there is a major risk associated with integration that doesn't show up in AAU-approvied statistics. But UNL was going out of the AAU with or without that integration, unless they actually got their own Med school going. ISU has zero chance of getting their own Med school...

    ISU's academic rankings decline continues

Ha, fair enough. To be honest I was 70% responding to what that post meant as refracted through the massive corpus this poster has in the Cave. I should do better with the profanity.

    ISU's academic rankings decline continues

Yes I would imagine this is probably already being pursued to some degree, again I am pontificating from afar as it's been almost 15 years since I was walking the corridors of ISU, and ten years since I was living in Iowa. The challenge here is that excellence -- international excellence -- is...

    ISU's academic rankings decline continues

At another Uni with a similar "actually helps farmers" profile, and is safely maintaining AAU status, I'll offer what has strategicaly worked here: ISU needs to lean in to their strengths including Vet Med and Bio/Ag Engineering. ISU can be world-class in those areas, and they need to be fast...

    ISU's academic rankings decline continues

An anecdote: I've been on the committee that interfaces with our local political leaders (including the federal ones, House Rep and Senators) and our Uni lobbyist. They ask the most about research and commercial activity. They love to hear about spinoffs, patents, and interdisciplinary...

    ISU's academic rankings decline continues

Well said on the two major imperatives of the modern R1: Research and Teaching. On the research side, forget the beauty of knowledge (nobody cares), there is a huge practical reason to suport Uni research: R1 Universities are huge business creators. The value of the spin-off businesses from R1...

    ISU's academic rankings decline continues

To Ayn-Rand-ists, paying for your retirement, paying for your health care, is worthless. It's nothing but political patronage. Paying a DMV employee's retirement is the canonical example of government "waste and fraud" to this guy. "A return for society". **** you old people. **** you DMV...
