What music are you listening to right now?

Long story short (I hope). Me and this hometown buddy were pretty tight during the '78-'79 years in Ames. Somehow I left a few albums with my roommate when I left Ames for my first "real job". It was not a big deal to me, but I guess my buddy got wind of it and tracked them down for me. His...

    Iowa groves look sad

Callery Pear is not the fruit pear. I'd swear it's the third most popular tree in Ankeny after maple and ash. The blossoms stink to high heaven. https://www.purdue.edu/fnr/extension/invasive-bradford-callery-pear-why-it-is-so-detrimental/

Not necessarily. With trees you don't want to develop an inbred or pure line. You find resistance and then use scions. Screening and finding resistance is the tough part. Ramp up can be relatively quick.

And have been for at least 20 years, because I grew their saplings. Yes, it will take a long time.

Oaks also look bad. Some select other species as well. The increased use of dicamba and the inability of farmers and coops to read, understand and obey labels is a huge part of the problem.

    Is Iowa an Eastern state?

This is the gateway to the West. Iowa is entirely west of it.

    Ankeny water ban

Corn grown for ethanol takes acres out of food production, unless you consider DDGs food somehow. It is not difficult to over-harvest stover, leaving acres vulnerable to erosion and more dependent on commercial fertilizer. Corn vs. perennial grass means no living roots in the soil profile for 8...

Interesting. Ethanol is not the only product produced through fermentation of corn starch. But I'd assume the water quality issue would apply to most any industrial enzymatic fermentation process.

Buffers also keep the Coop boys from flinging fertilizer granules right into the running water. Bank stabilization is way undervalued.

I bet you are correct on this. I have access to 25-30A of ~40 year CRP in the Loess Hills that all drains into a farm pond. About 5 acres of row cropped land (no-till) also does, but through the prairie. This pond has barely had enough water to support a small fish population for the last four...
