Random Thoughts 18: The Year of Fire

Yes, I've had it for a couple of years now. I had it probably 10 years ago, and it was sketch in certain parts of Iowa. For the last two years I've had it, I've never noticed an issue anywhere I've been. The only part of the state that I haven't been is the far southeast of the state. To be...

    Smoking Meat Questions and Discussion

I love that rack. Marie Sharps Hot Sauce-I first discovered this in Belieze Blues Hog-Champions Blend and Raspberry Chipotle (my personal favorite) Stubbs-Sticky Sweet is solid Kinders-Haven't found one that I love yet The next time I'm there I want to get the Japanese BBQ sauce.

It's probably not needed, I'm sure about any binder would do but that's what I saw on the video. I've also used it when I've smoked turkey.

I got it at Shields but I think I've seen it at Wal-Mart too. Amazon is nearly double the price for the same brand.

    Can they do anything?

    Speed camera

I think this is somewhat true up to a certain speed. I usually drive 79mph on 70mph highways in Iowa. When I've drive in South Dakota on 80mph highways, I stayed pretty close to 80mph. When I drove on the autobahn, where there are some sections without speed limits, I probably averaged around...

    Speed camera

For the last 15 years or so I've had to drop down from 74mph to 69mph for roughly 1/4 mile on my way to work to avoid those cameras. Every day that costs me .881 seconds if I drop my speed from 74 to 69 for 1/4 mile. If those cameras have been in place for 15 years, and I've worked 3,900 days...

    Speed camera

The other articles didn't seem to give specifics in Des Moines. Cameras were approved at the following 25 sites: 4700 block Interstate 235, eastbound. (This is the city's only approved fixed camera.) 4300 block Ingersoll Avenue, eastbound and westbound. 2800 block SW Ninth Street, northbound...

    Tap Rooms Iowa

Not a tap room, and not in my area, but the next time I'm in the area I really want to check out The Dig Inn in Reinbeck. Looks like they have a great tap list along with spinning some vinyl.

    Tap Rooms Iowa

I checked out Wilson's out in Cumming's and was disappointed. I expected that location to have a great outdoors setup, which it didn't. I also expected it to be more taproom than restaurant, and once again it was the opposite. There is a bar with like 10 seats but 90% of the seating is booth...

    Speed camera

Yes, because these cameras were all about safety....Like the one on 235 that has been working for the last decade and there has been zero proof that it's saved one life. We've been down this road before, most are not intended to save lives, they are there to make money and the DOT called them...

    Speed camera

That's probably why the DOT is allowing them to stay? or are these not the ones? I-380 at Diagonal Drive (NB) I-30 at J Avenue (SB) Williams Boulevard at 16 Avenue SW (NB) Williams Boulevard at 16 th Avenue SW (SB)

Thank you DOT https://www.thegazette.com/state-government/majority-of-traffic-cameras-nixed-by-iowa-dot-under-new-law/ I haven't been able to find which one in Des Moines is staying. There will now be fixed automated traffic cameras in just five Iowa cities: four each in Cedar Rapids and...

    Fence staining

Anyone pay someone to staying their fence? I stained mine about 6 years ago and it's needing a refresh. I remember telling myself last time to never do it again. I have 160feet of 6 foot fence. Thoughts on what that should cost?

When do you think you will buy a 100% pure electric vehicle?

I've seen studies where most people that have PHEV's don't even charge them. Not sure why you would buy a vehicle that is worse in nearly every way to it's gas counterpart if you don't charge it. https://insideevs.com/news/630341/plug-in-hybrids-arent-being-plugged-in-study/...

Friday AI - We welcome our robot overlords

I use it a lot for software questions I have. The software is very specialized and it works great as long as I am detailed about my needs. For very general things, I find it to be wrong a lot. Like data questions where it's provable that it's very wrong. This has been the case with both ChatGPT...

What TV show are you streaming right now?

We started watching the traitors on Peacock (2nd season). We're about 8 episodes in and I'm 100% hooked. I'm torn on whether to go upstairs and tell my wife to quit working so hard, so we can start the next episode.

    Smoking Meat Questions and Discussion

I saw a video on YT on how to crisp up chicken wings. Turned out pretty good. 225 for about an hour and then 400 for about 20 minutes. When they were done I tossed them into some buffalo/butter. Will have again. Edit- Forgot one piece. Between temp change, I sprayed them with duck fat and...

    WTF is Schwan’s thinking

Yes, but hy-vee doesn't carry the same kind of stuff we got from Schwan's. Things like gallons of amazing ice cream, a box of Jalapeno poppers/Mozzarella Sticks that could feed a family for a week, etc.

    WTF is Schwan’s thinking

I have to think there is a market for this. Specialized food products that are delivered to your home seems like something that would work. I guess places like Costco/Sam's offer similar products for a lot lower price.
