    Massive explosion in Beirut

He used an ANFO bomb, which has a higher energy potential. The extra hydrocarbons from the fuel oil maximize the oxygen available from the ammonium nitrate as it breaks down.

    Here's someone with more experience.

    Massive explosion in Beirut

Part of me thinks it might be nitrogen dioxide, but my knowledge of that type of chemistry is incredibly limited.

    OT: Mommy's Alright, Daddy's Alright

They do now, since both of them went to college. They didn’t understand when I went to grad school. My dad asked if it was like a job. I said sort of, I get paid and have health coverage. He retired as an electrician, so I described it like an advanced apprenticeship. My mom, who was a nurse...

Friday OT #1 - Feels Like Summer

Thanks @Angie. Glad you like the idea. I have several for different times in my life. Summer 97/98 - Phish “A Live One” I worked at a summer camp with a bunch of Phishheads and this was on heavy rotation. Summer 2002/3 - Wilco “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” I spent most of my summer inside a lab...

Friday OT #1 - Ain't no other way to play the game the way I play

I was incredibly thankful for PCs when I was writing my thesis after I kept getting feedback regarding spacing, etc. from whoever binds them on campus. I can only imagine the hassle of that type of work prior.

Cassette tapes are making a comeback

    This makes no sense.

Friday OT #3 - The Amazonian

2003. Bought 2 Johnny Cash CDs and a Death Cab for Cutie album. Most of my earliest purchases were music.

Friday OT #1 - Ain't no other way to play the game the way I play

Music: iPod followed by Spotify I bought a lot of music in high school/college and always had a Walkman/Discman along with tapes/CDs and batteries. The simplification brought on by the technology advancement was awesome. Hobby: Took on a summer job guiding in the BWCA without ever being there...

Friday OT #2 - You've Got To Hide Your Love Away

I pretty much lived in Moly Bio during my time at ISU. There was a small journal library on either the 3rd or 4th floor (I can't remember which) and that was almost always a quiet spot.

    Update on a vaccine

That's one of the things about the Oxford vaccine candidate. The lab previously worked on SARS and MERS (same family of viruses as COVID-19) so they were able to spin up faster. They've got agreements with AstraZeneca and a plan to crank up to 2 billion doses. It will take time. More details in...

    Friday OT #2 - Superfluous

Those are sweet rides, but I'm trying to go lighter. I'm actually looking at a Bonneville.

Friday OT #1 - The Baguettes

I forgot about those. Add in a pair of those with a Ralph Lauren long sleeve polo shirt and Eastland shoes, and those were the rich kids. Later it was Doc Marten boots.

    Friday OT #2 - Superfluous

Not a Harley guy, but I'm in the same boat. I'm ready to trade in my current motorcycle (2006 Concours) and buy a Triumph.

    North Shore MN recommendations

I worked on a few of the trails in that area about a decade ago (specifically the single track). Here's a map to some of the loops: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5422246.pdf Link to some more options...

    North Shore MN recommendations

I've spent a fair amount of time up in that area, so here are a few more ideas that are off the beaten track that haven't been mentioned yet. 1. Coho Cafe in Tofte. Right off of 61 and they have really good food. I'm a big fan of their wild rice sausage pizza. 2. Judge C.R. Magney State Park...

Friday OT #1 - Never Gonna Get It

There are 2 albums that I've tried several times to get into that are classics that I just can't seem to connect with. Ironically, both are from 1969. 1. Trout Mask Replica - Captain Beefheart 2. ******* Brew - Miles Davis I've listened to both at different stages of my life, and will likely...

    OT: Watchmen on HBO

It's available still on my Hulu account (I have the cheap one with commercials) and I just binged it in the last 24 hours. I can't add anything more than what's already been said in this thread.
