Literally screenshots in the article.

Like I said a year ago, this is a money pit. It'll keep surviving in some capacity because Vegas does Vegas things but it's just not sustainable.

They just announced it's gonna cost $80M+ to convert Wizard of Oz to this screen. That's almost 100 completely sold out shows at $50 a piece just to break even.

It's one of the coolest things ever so if you get the chance, go to a show or whatever you want while they're still lighting money on fire.
Vegas is crazy money imo not only from ownership but includes those that want to blow a wad to “what stays in Vegas”. Obviously, it appeals to lots of folks but when in Vegas it’s hard to agree that there are any economic problems in this country.

A few things:
  1. That $80M is a one time cost. They can run this movie whenever they want in the future.
  2. Not all seats cost the same.
  3. There will be events in the future that will bridge the in person/at home gap (UFC 306)
  4. There was a picture circulating around the other day of a sports bar in California(?) using IMAX type tech to make the viewing experience seem like you're actually there. I would assume this will be coming to the Sphere as well (I'm not sure by body would be able to handle watching March Madness on the Sphere)
  5. Perhaps one of its hidden "abilities" is the external marketing abilities. If you're within eyesight of the Sphere, you can be marketed to.
After watching just a few videos of the Dead and Co shows, it's pretty clear the Sphere's capabilities exceed even my expectations of what is possible with live entertainment.

I spend a night in Vegas, that was enough. I'm not into gambling and while the hotels seem cool, once you get through the lobby you're just in a casino like any other.

The screenshot in the article doesn't really show the entire picture. Looking at the full financial statements shows depreciation for the year at $256 million. So back out the non-cash item depreciation and they show net income. Also, looking at the Cash Flow Statement shows they had positive cash flows for the year.

So imo the article is misleading.

Misleading or not, this is a wild stat:

That can't be common, can it?

I feel that was a U2 only deal. No one else will get a deal like that. Plus wasn't U2 the first resident there? If so, you have to give them extra incentives.

If the shows kickass, then other artists are lining up to play there.

I saw u2 twice while I was there. It is an amazing venue. I will go to other shows there when it is shows I like. Vegas isn't my thing but the sphere is bad ass.

If they sync it up with Dark Side of the Moon, I’m all in for multiple showings.

MSG Sphere actually built a new office near me in Burbank and they shaped the office like a sphere, a smaller sphere. They’re hiring a lot of tech and creative people.

Was just going to ask if anyone was watching UFC 306 - the walkout visuals have been amazing.
I would love to see it as an NCAA Tourney site. You could have every other game up on the screen with statistics for each one of them and you'd still have space. Real time, in game gambling. I'm sure it would absolutely suck to play basketball in though.

$93m in operating loss this quarter alone.

I'll wait for the people calling me out to say it's a smashing success again. Even though it hasn't even come close to operating at a profit

"Our Sphere segment generated positive adjusted operating income in the first quarter as we make progress on our strategic priorities for the business," Sphere Entertainment CEO James Dolan said in a news release.

Sphere Entertainment says adjusted operating income removes compensation expenses, amortization for a cloud computing arrangement, costs from debt work-out and acquisitions, and insurance recoveries.

Ummm, you lost money James and BS accounting won't "hide" that for long. The fixed overhead costs for that place must be massive.

Amortization is a non-cash expense and debt-workout/acquisitions are probably considered one time expenses. It isn’t BS accounting. It’s pretty standard practice. Why do you care?
