With all of the rumors around the PAC 12 finally failing and the ACC teams getting restless I was wondering how people would rank the potential newcomers? This is just for fun, as we know there is a GOR and the ACC teams would have a hell of a time getting out of it. It could end up the Big 12 only takes two from the PAC and maybe takes some from the ACC. Obviously most of the top tier teams would be grabbed by the Big 10/SEC but it would just be interesting to see how the Big 12/Iowa State fans would value them. With that being said here is the list of potential teams:

PAC 12

Arizona
Oregon
Arizona State
Washington State
Utah
Colorado
Washington
Stanford
Oregon State
California

ACC

Miami
Virginia
Duke
Clemson
Pittsburgh
NC State
North Carolina
Wake Forest
Syracuse
Boston College
Virginia Tech
Florida State
Georgia Tech
Notre Dame
Louisville

G5

UConn
Memphis
San Diego St

Arizona
Pitt
VaTech
ASU
UConn
NC State
Utah

No longer interested in teams that are likely to get absorbed into SEC/Big Ten. If a few of them like say Duke get obviously passed over they’d then want to join Big 12 and it changes. My criteria is basically who adds the most without a P2 invite likely.

If we only add 4 these would be mine:

1. Colorado
2. Louisville
3. Arizona
4. Pitt

If we extend beyond and create a super conference:

5. Washington St
6. Oregon St.
7. Va. Tech
8. UCONN
9. NC State
10. Miami
11. Syracuse
12. Wake Forest
13. Boston College
14. Arizona State
15. Utah
16. Georgia Tech

Didn't include schools that won't ever entertain the idea:

Notre Dame, Clemson, Oregon, Stanford, Washington, Duke, North Carolina, Florida State, Cal

Didn't include G5 schools I don't want to see in the Big 12:

Memphis, San Diego State

Since we're doing hypotheticals....

Add
Miami
Duke
Clemson
Florida State

Drop
BYU
Houston
UCF
Baylor

I don't necessary love those ACC schools, FSU in particular, but they would instantly improve the conference football standing, plus the conference could drop schools that don't belong or just deserve to burn in hell (Baylor).

My rankings currently:

Notre Dame*
Clemson*
Oregon*
Florida State*
UNC*
Washington*
Virginia*
Miami*
Colorado
Virginia Tech
Arizona
Pitt
Louisville
Utah
NC State
ASU
Duke

I think these are the only teams that bring value to the Big 12. Maybe Georgia Tech for location only but they don't excite me at all.

*No shot but would love to take them and maybe wouldn't make sense to take them as they would have one foot out the door. Would be hard to pass them up though.

Louisville and Pitt fit in nicely with WVU and Cinci. AZ and CU would be great additions to the West. I think it’s important to only take schools that want to be in our conference. Getting OR and WA would be flashy but hurt the conference if they’re only one foot in.

The play with UConn I think is that women's basketball is on the rise, and will offset their lack of football pedigree along with their men's basketball prowess. Idk if it's a good bet, but I'm coming around to it. I agree Louisville should be higher though for the same basketball reasons and better football to boot

In the very first rounds of realignment I wanted to add Louisville and byu to replace missouri/A&M/Neb/co. Louisville basically begged then later got their acc invite.

Most of the board strongly disagreed w me on both but especially Louisville. That was a long time ago though.

I think how you rank them depends critically on your vision for the B12's future and the future of college athletics. Esp if you are really trying to max out basketball.

Ignoring the "they will be B1G/SEC for sure" factor, just purely as a rating/ranking/draft order in terms of value to the B12:

A Notre Dame*
A Miami*
A Florida State*
A- Oregon*
A- Clemson*
B+ Utah
B+ Washington*
C+ Arizona
C North Carolina*
C Duke
C Louisville
C Pittsburgh
C Colorado
D+ Arizona State
D+ NC State
D+ Virginia Tech
D+ Stanford
D+ Syracuse
D UConn
D Oregon State
D Virginia
D Washington State
D Georgia Tech
F Memphis
F Wake Forest
F San Diego St
F California
F Boston College

Tried to weight it for FB, BB, geography, tv draw, and general fit/swag.
* means these are likely not real options for the B12. SEC/B1G will take 8 I think, and I have 7 called out. The 8th might be Stanford, Duke, or UVa.

Another thing is if we ignore geography or not. It is a pain.

Iowans/midwesterners are spoiled they can fly anywhere from middle of the country with 0-2 time zone change max.

I fly west to east coast for work 3-4 times a year and even if I have a direct flight the only thing I can do that entire day I go east is fly.

I used to be huge Louisville proponent, nobody agreed with me then but it seems we’ve changed, they fit right in geographically which does help the actual athletic departments.

Current ranking based on realistic outcomes in the short term (no ACC, no teams with BIG or SEC potential):

Arizona
Colorado
Arizona State
Utah (although this may be a mistake with their superiority complex)
Oregon State
UConn
Gonzaga
San Diego State (only if absolutely necessary)

I do think Yormark is forward thinking, so I do like his basketball focus as a differentiator for the Big 12.

If we went to 16 teams, I'd want the four teams that would bring in the most viewership and revenue:

Oregon
Florida State
Notre Dame
Clemson

The Big 12 isn't in a great spot, so adding these four schools would solidify us as a top tier conference in football.
