I've collected since I was a kid. Got rid of most of my cards during college then started up again. I put together a super set of PSA 7 1956 Topps which was #4 in the nation when I auctioned it 3 years ago. I retired and cleaned out much of what I had- wax cases, rack cases, boxes of baseball, football, and basketball. 70 some 5000 count boxes. Raw 1956 topps set, 1966 Topps PSA 8 high number group, full raw baseball sets 1969 to 1986 topps , Donruss, and Fleer, several Topps Tiffany sets, Fleer glossy sets, and more. Sold to a national collector. He came in with an 18 foot U haul truck and we loaded out. I've kept a few things currently doing 2 1971 topps basketball sets and a PSA 8 1970 Topps basketball set. Best recent pull was arookie Cody Bellanger Topps chrome autograph. Sold it right away on ebay. I've just enjoyed collecting hope you will too.

Oh I had this prized possession as a young Hawkeye fan.
Just to balance out the karma of the thread:
Many of those were commons. With cases I had over a million cards. I did a few shows in the 80's even promoted one. Bought a lot of worthless cards in the late 80's and early 90's. Filled my graded sets from Ebay. I bought several collections from the 70's and just put the cards away. that was my start to the raw sets I made. It is still fun but I don't buy much new stuff anymore. Don't recognize the names of many of the guys playing now.
87 Topps was my favorite set ever. Ihave a unopened complete set and I collected the entire set through packs back in the day.
Like every other guy my age, I accumulated a bunch of now-worthless cards in the late 80’s/early 90’s. It’s great that the “hobby” is seeing such resurgence, but I don’t know how an 8-year old could ever get started. No inventory, the grading scam, everything with manufactured scarcity... seems unsustainable. There’s something to be said for a 50 cent wax pack with one card destroyed by the inedible “gum.”
Probably a 52 Topps Mays, 52 Topps Feller or 59 Topps Gibson RC.
More current, love my 75 Topps and Topps mini George Brett RC’s too.
Nice! I had the opportunity to meet Bob Feller once at his farm. Really nice guy. The George Brett RC is a nice card. Have you seen the Topps Project 2020 cards? If you’re into more artistic cards a few of the George Brett cards are pretty creative. One specifically says pine tar on it!
I was an occasional collector in the '70s and '80s, curious why you think the hobby went downhill specifically in '87?
I don’t know, in 88 they started having the pictures partially block the team name at the top of the card. That was next level stuff.
As a kid a buddy and I went in together to complete 92 Upper Deck and Fleer Ultra sets. Bought so many packs. Great return on investment there.
Oversaturation of cards and the hobby became really commercialized around that time. I enjoyed collecting for the pureness of it. That is lost in today's hobby IMO.
I primarily focus on 50s cards only right now. Love the early Bowman and Topps stuff.

I think I have an unopened set somewhere too but not sure. I have an extra Ed Lynch card on my refrigerator because that card cracks me up.
