PEMDAS: Parentheses left to right, then Exponents left to right, then Multiplication and Division left to right then Addition and Subtraction left to right. I didn't work through the problem to the numerical answer, but PEMDAS is the convention that all math follows.

Based on the dashes under the equation, I agree, the answer they want is 1.this is true, but it gives an ugly answer. (5.5+1.666-1)
if you do it left to right ignoring that it comes out to 1
