We've committed to another year of horrific basketball with no hope when we retained Prohm.

It will be a lame duck year, he'll hopefully be relieved of his duties, and we'll move on.

Yep, this train was set in motion long ago. This season was never going to be about getting the program back on track, it is burning down another year of the buyout. Just digging the hole a little deeper for the next guy so we can save a few bucks.

This wasn't unexpected, but dammit it still sucks. Iowa has always been called the flyover state, and apparently transfers are catching on to that moniker too. Stick a fork in Steve if he can't start wooing quality players. This teams ceiling with the current group of guys is 15 wins. That's ceiling, not prediction or estimate. That's 15 wins with these guys, with a lot of breaks going their way.

Or two years, depending how the money goes this fall. Maybe even more.
Even if we do fire him next year, after the coaching carousel grinding to a halt this year, there are going to be so many openings next year its going to be a bad time to be hiring.

The new transfer rule is expected to go in to effect next season as well, it'll also be a bad time to be firing. Any program with a coaching change will be totally gutted.

This is going to sound really negative, but why the hell would any transfer come here right now? You only have a precious year or two of college basketball left - what about Iowa State's program right now would make you feel like it's the place to spend that last year or two?

The program is in a damaged state right now.

We have a good recent track record of getting people to the NBA.
2019 - THT and Shayok drafted
2017 - Morris
2016 - Niang and Nader

Couple that with the fact that we have 8 players currently in the NBA, and it's fairly attractive.

Compare that to the Seton Hall who has 0 players currently in the NBA.

If you want to get to the NBA, ISU is probably a better place than SH.

I mean, how gutted could we possibly get?

Bold prediction: Aiken is a bust next season.
After tomorrow we won't care about Aiken. Once a recruit goes elsewhere ISU fans don't pay attention to them at all. Name a transfer we really wanted last year and without looking tell me if they did well or not.

This morning, I caught the end of the 2015 ISU vs. Iowa game where Monte hit a last second shot to win it after being down the whole game. That team had Monte, Thomas and Niang, all high school guys that developed through the years here.

I'm now beginning to think that ISU is in 'long-play' mode where we simply have to recruit better and develop our guys. I hope to be surprised, but it seems thus far that we're going to have to go with what we have on campus plus some warm transfer/juco bodies that aren't gonna shock the world by any means, but be practice bodies.

Patients is in order unfortunately.
1 of the 4 players from the 2019 recruiting class is still on the roster
1 of the 4 players from the 2018 recruiting class is still on the roster

The long-play mode isn't working.

Well, with that mindset, we would never have Campbell as a head coach.

Sales training 101 - Understand the needs of the prospect, then position how your opportunity pairs with that need. Each prospect is different. One of the biggest sales failures is assuming you know what the customer wants because you know what you would want if you were prospecting for opportunities like yours. For example, different recruits in different orders of priority might be looking for:
-location (fun)
-location (away from last or away from known)
-location - away from distraction
-location closer to home
-starting opportunity
-opportunity to be "the man"
-desire to be on a winning team
-working with a coach with proven track record of getting players to next level
-no interest in "next level", but want last year to be fun
-comfort with teammates
-TV/national exposure
-System that fits their style
-recruiter they connect with
-head coach they connect with
-campus they like
-academic status in their chosen field of study
-level they feel challenges them but they can be successful
-not their choice at all but where trusted adviser tells them to go
(tons more)

So, to answer your questions, there are a lot of reasons to join the ISU program. The challenge for the staff will be the ability to build relationships to get a firm understanding of which are truly driving the recruit's decision process without the normal time/contact to build that relationship. ISU is a net positive when recruits get on campus - How well will that show 'virtually'?

So the question is, "Why are we still a fan?" I ask that question as your answer to it is a potential selling point.

Getting a 1-2 year grad transfer player to come to ISU vs getting a coach to come to ISU are two completely different things. Not even remotely similar.
