Would love to hire a Bobby Lutz or Doc Sadler type of X's and O's guy instead of another recruiter. That's just me. Fred always seemed to get a "real coach" that was not exactly the best recruiter but could run a practice and improve the product.

I agree. I think Steve can recruit. But his team's don't sustainably improve throughout the year. We need a coach.

Barry from Darmouth staying put, and Carlik Jones listed his 8 and we weren't in it. Lots of power 5 schools in his last choices. Also, McGowens didn't put us in his final 8. There are others out there but they have much better schools pursuing them like Gonzaga or Louisville. Gonna be a long shot for Steve to hit 2 or 3 home runs on transfer market. Barring major improvement from current players and the freshman lighting the world on fire a la Maryland a few years back, I don't see this going well for Steve.

Averaging 18 a game. Still D1 basketball. I agree you never know until they are here but I feel like he was promising.

These don't have to be mutually exclusive. College basketball staffs are small enough people need to fill both a "coach role" and a "recruiting role". I think defensive specialist is a big key to the offseason. I also agree that person should provide recruiting connections that enhance our coverage.



I would agree with this. I've said before it's not really clear to me what everyone on the staff's role is, but my impression is that Small is probably the strongest guy on the bench. Having a shakeup though to me is the top priority of the off season. Yes we need to bring in talent, but we have to bring in someone that at least makes it look like we have some coherent plan on the defensive end of the court.

Hoiberg didn't teach defense either and I don't think anybody would say he shouldn't be a head coach.

I'd venture to say that the majority of D1 coaches are better at teaching one end of the floor than the other...unless they are elite coaches.

A good head coach should recognize he has strengths and weaknesses and should hire assistants (or at least one assistant) that will supplement the areas in which the HC is weakest.
