Does the small amount of upsets at 133 mean Small has a good chance to gain an At Large bid?

99.999999999% chance. He's the only guy who was in the top 25 in the last coaches panel that needs one.

Shapiro is not eligible though, he needed Orndorff to autoqualify and since that did not happen he isn't even in the pool for consideration unless he gets an RPI out of nowhere in the post-conference calculations. To be considered you have to have 2 of the following
  • Top 33 ranking
  • Top 33 RPI
  • 0.700 D-1 win percentage
  • 0.700 overall win percentage
  • Finish 1 spot short of an autoqualification spot at conference
  • Own a Win over an autoqualifier
He was 30th in the last ranking and there's no reason for him to drop given who his losses were to, but Orndorff didn't autoqualify as expected so he didn't hit a second leg.

They also do another coaches rank after the qualifying tournaments. Shapiro didn't do anything to increase his rank, so assume he's out of luck.

Why doesn’t he have an RPI? Or is it just not high enough?

Prior to the weekend, he had a coaches rank of 30 and was not in top 33 of RPI (37 per Wrestlestat).

at 197:
auto qualifiers - 27
available at large - 6
earned auto bid for conf but didn't qualify - 4

That likely leaves 2 additional spots between:
Striggow of Michigan - previous ranks CR 32, RPI 22 (now 28 per Wrestlestat), placed one out of auto qualifier
Urbas of Penn - previous rank RPI 33 (now 30 per Wrestlestat), placed one out of auto qualifier, wins over a couple qualifiers
Orndorff of Utah Valley - previous rank CR 21, RPI 32 (now 35 per Wrestlestat), wins over a couple qualifiers (good win over Sloan)

I wonder if they make any changes to this system before next year? Or did it take an act of God to change how they do it? Not saying it’s completely broken but maybe some tweaking would make sense???

I'd think they'd always want to consider tweaks but the general process seems fair and transparent to me.
