How did Baylor football do what ISU couldn't?

What was it that allowed Baylor to take the steps that ISU couldn't, but was expected to by many pundits before the year started? One aspect that makes me salty about this is, Baylor copied Heacock's defense, but did it better.

Just curious about others thoughts on the subject. It might of been discussed in other threads.

I thought their execution was generally better. They also got lucky as F vs. Tech and such.

It’s the previous 5-7 years before the ones you listed. Baylor was a well known name and their recruiting classes they currently have average top third in the conference. Throw location on top and it is an easier place to win at currently.

If you look at 247 their classes are 4/5 in the B12 for a while now. So they are getting good players and I think most everyone here thinks they have a good staff. Their noncon this year was as bad as it gets.

Winning a couple close games versus losing a couple makes a major difference in outcome for the season and comes down to execution or luck on a handful of plays at key times.

They are also striking at the right time down there.
Tech, TCU, aTm, UT, Rice, Houston, etc haven't been blowing anyone away.

As much of a Summers Eve as Herman is, aTm is paying a fortune for no better results than they've historically had.

They've recruited well. There was no reason for them to go 1-11 with the talent they had that season.

With that said, they did a great job making big plays in key situations this season... credit to Rhule for that

Yes, pretty well it. They made plays when they had too, or teams like ISU missed FGs, to let them escape. They do have some very good linemen, which goes a long ways. The easy schedule really helps teams find their way a lot of times, sorta of like MN this year. They struggled to survive against some pretty marginal teams, but they found their way and were pretty impressive today.

Look at Baylor's record before Rhule took over:

2012 8-5
2013 11-2 Big 12 Title
2014 11-2 Big 12 Title-Tied
2015 10-3
2016 7-6 (Grobe)

Not a single losing record in the 5 years prior to Rhule taking over and two Big 12 titles which means that he had guys on his team when he got there that knew what it took to win. ISU did not have that luxury when we hired Campbell.

On top of that, go look at the recruiting classes for those years:

I'll add one other thing -- the systemic problem of CORRUPTION (Money & Power) in Waco that drowns out the voices of true victims. That program should have been ousted from the conference after the VERY UNCHRISTIAN culture that was allowed to thrive ever since their admission into the Big 12 (starting with the murder scandal under MBB coach Dave Bliss). The evil then migrated over to the FB program as the BU Administration looked the other way. The result? Let's face it, nothing of significance - donations from powerful oilmen can more than make up for whatever Big 12 penalty was imposed! Texas oil is truly bigger than the voices of the rape & assault victims as well as the NCAA's ability to take action. This is one program that truly does NOT deserve to be in ANY bowl game or ANY conference. It is incredibly sickening!!

Luck, winning turnover battles and not playing Iowa. Last year ISU gets 10+ wins playing a crappy team instead of Iowa and finishing a play or two in another game.
