Audubon HS used to be bigger, but I believe Audubon County was particularly hard hit by the farm crisis in the 1980s. It was a big cattle feeding area.
I recall exactly where I was when I heard this (and, that it was so long ago is the only reason I have to believe my memory could be off, that is — could certainly be sufficient). But I recall a Paul Harvey radio commentary in the 1970s where he said there was a higher concentration of millionaires in Audubon County than any other county in the United States. That is, not more millionaires than any other county, but the most millionaires per capita. In the 1970s you would mentally associate Audubon with nearby Atlantic as to sports prowess. Today the population is more comparable to towns such as Avoca or Oakland to the west. Physically, in square miles, Iowa counties are almost all pretty close. But, at a glance, Audubon County appears to be one of the smallest.
As late as the 1950s, local Audubon County producers would hire a special train to haul cattle to market in Chicago. Today there is a T-Bone trail bike path, previously a rail spur between Atlantic and Audubon.

I heard yesterday that this was Audobon's first playoff appearance since the late 80s...when they were in class 3A. . . .
False. I think that stat it was their first dome trip or semi final appearance since then. I think they’ve made playoffs most if not every year of the past 5 or so years.
