It is such a pervasive theme in our country and culture, everywhere you look in the movies, on television, it makes me wonder if it is totally healthy or indicative of some of the other weird things that are going on.

I wouldn't read too much into it. Personally, the super hero movies were the defibrillator paddles for my movie-going experience. I'd hit children's movies with my daughter, but I rarely got excited about going to the theater unless it was a movie that really caught my eye. I enjoy the genre because it's purely entertaining and it takes my mind off my real world for a few hours.

I don't think it has anything to do with the current state of affairs. It's about money and striking while the iron is hot. There have been super heroes forever in comics, on tv and in the movies. It took awhile for studios to finally say, "We have a following and the potential for boatloads of money. Let's try doing this really well instead of having it be the campy versions that we're used to." Marvel's success is remarkable and commendable. I'm curious to see how they move forward without falling victim to over-saturation and super hero burnout.

They are probably wise to give the public a while to take a breath, but it's still a genre that has a sizable footprint and is remarkably good at reproducing a fan base from generation to generation.

Opposed to murder porn that so many people are obsessed with? "Cant wait to see the next serial killer movie" That genre is so popular which escapes me but to each their own.

Also another I despise is heist, or con movies. I don't get the fascination with that.

I don't think it's any different than the Star Wars resurgence in the late 90s with the prequels and theatrical re-release of the original trilogy. Also there was the medieval/epic film craze largely inspired by Lord of the Rings and Gladiator (Troy, Kingdom of Heaven, King Arthur, etc). Superheroes are just the most recent cinematic fad and every studio owns (or “owned” in the case of Fox and Paramount) a few properties that were worth making films about. If anything, it shows the fickleness of the film industry: why try to come up with an original idea when there are properties that fans are already familiar with?

Dont forget about the Vampire/Warewolves craze. Still disappointed that outside of Interview with the Vampire, we never good a good Ann Rice movie while the craze was at a peak. Instead we got their abomination adaption of Queen of the Damned. Not sure I have ever been so disappointed watching a movie before but them making that movie out of the blue is equivalent of doing Avengers Infinity War with no lead up movies and a 1/100th of the budget.

Lets all not forget the age of the Westerns. That lasted a long time. While more TV than movies, wasn't maybe 5 years ago about the height of police procedurals on TV? My goodness. I was about ready to puke if I saw another NCIS pop up. I still feel like for CBS, aka the old people network, that still is their bread and butter.

As for superheroes, while I'm not in that group, I could totally see non-fans getting very much to the point of annoyance, and somewhat sympathize with them. Luckily for them, one effect of the streaming/cable wars is that we are arguably in the golden age of TV where we've never seen better quality and diversity on that side of the isle. There is nearly movie-level quality TV to be found by pretty much anyone.

If we really want to go a long way back - think about how many Westerns came out from the 50s through the 60s. I think that's the comparison here. Just heaps and heaps of westerns came out and really drove the industry for almost 2 decades. They still make Westerns, but now they are kind of deconstructions of the old tropes, very much like "The Boys" on Prime.

I've never been a Western guy, but I love me some 3:10 to Yuma. That movie was fantastic.

Sorry, I know this is a little off the subject, but has America gone overboard with super-hero mind-numbing bs, or am I off base here? I really didn't want to start a new thread on this, but I went through new tv programs and movies, and than stuff has gone off the charts. I just don't get it.

Yes, it's getting oversaturated, and I assume that the global phenomenon will eventually die down a bit. It will probably get to the point where only original comic book fans really love the movies and people who've never opened a comic decide to skip it.
That doesn't mean the movies aren't or can't be good and enjoyable for those that are fans.

Most of us in this thread are, as Stan Lee would say, True Believers. We cared about comic books before it got trendy and blew up in the mainstream, and we'll care when it dies down.

It's like anything that blows up though. It won't last forever, and if you don't care for it, don't watch it. I'm rarely one to piss in someone else's Cheerios though. Like what you like and I'll like what I like.

With D23 coming up this weekend, the following are probably the key events to keep an eye out for new Marvel news:

Friday, Aug 23rd @ 5:30 pm: Disney+ Panel
Saturday, Aug 24th @ 12 pm: Disney Studios Panel

As of right now, its pretty hard to tell how much new will get revealed. It could be a lot or it could be very little on the Marvel side.

If this Sony/Marvel deal in fact is donezo, unfortunately we need to also put a big X through this ship as well...... RIP

This is dividing the superhero genre into 2 categories: comicbook fans and everyone else. There is a large 3rd category that also won't turn so quickly on these movies either: 80s and 90s babies that grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons.

I don't know that many people that actually read the comics, but I do know a lot of people that grew up watching Batman, Spiderman, and X-Men that cannot get enough of these movies. Even when Marvel introduces new characters to us such as well most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe we cannot get enough. I for one will never stop watching them if they continue to be this good.

Even if it dies down for a while, say if phase 5 is terrible. I still think it will be restarted and revived 10-20 years later, next time it will be the kids that watched this MCU reliving their childhood. Sorry if you don't like superheroes, but I wouldn't plan on them every going anywhere.

Yeah, even if we get a poor quality lull where we lose some fans, I have a hard time believing Superheroes aren't here to last to some extent. The way to look at it is that we've had 10 years now raising an entire generation on these heroes where the MCU to them is what Star Wars was to us. The MCU is truly this generation's Star Wars.

Its totally cool not to be into Marvel or DC movies, but I can't help but want to kick this turdburger in the nuts. It doesn't exactly make me excited to see this guy in the new Joker movie nor does it endear that movie to me any more, especially when this follow's Joker director Todd Phillips saying that his movie intentionally has nothing to do with the comics. Its starting to feel more and more like we've got a bunch of entitled pricks making a comic book movie that isn't a comic book movie.

Star Wars crossed my mind when I wrote it. There is an interview with Lucas where he was talking about critics of the prequel trilogy and The Clone Wars animated series saying how they spoke to a different generation creating all new fans. Acting and story line of the prequels may have upset Original fans, but they were good enough movies to make me a Star Wars fan. Now Original fans and my self are both going to watch the Disney ones together.

If it was just for grown male nerd children, then why did it make ridiculous amounts of money? Everyone and their mom went to see End Game.

See I'm a fan of the Original Trilogy who was disappointed overall with the Prequels. I went in expecting Empire Strikes Back quality, but Episode 1 was geared towards a younger audience.

Now as a parent, I have seen how much my kids enjoyed the Prequels, and they in turn enjoy the newest trilogy along with me.

Everyone has been losing it lately because the most recent trilogy hasn't been blowing their socks off. I love Star Wars. Period. The Last Jedi wasn't the best movie ever, but I still enjoyed it.

TLJ lost me as a huge fan. I’ll see the movies going forward but probably rent them like I did solo.
