For as much crap as Heyward has gotten as a Cub he's putting together his best season as Cub so far. Already more homers than any season and probably on pace to easily top just about every top offensive stat as a Cub too.

I heard a take on him the other month and the host said take his contract out of the equation and ask yourself this. Is Heyward an capable and above average starting OF? His gold glove in RF and his offensive numbers compared to the average starting OF says yes. Also factor in how good of a teammate and leader he is in the clubhouse and while people think with his contract he should be hitting 30 homers and 100 RBI the Cubs are still getting plenty of value from him in the areas they need him to contribute and he's still better than a lot of starting OF when you look at the total package.

If you want to go by just WAR this season he's easily the Cubs top OF and 5th best on the team with a 1.6 WAR, Schwarber has a 0.1 and Almora 0.7

As for sweeping the Pirates, let's see them take no worse than 2 of 3 from the Reds, Padres, and Giants before they have a tough stretch coming up with with 3 @ Milwaukee, 3 @ St Louis, and 3 at home with the Brewers again. The way the schedule is setup the Cubs could really create some separation in the division if they dispose of 3 teams they should with either sweeps or take 2 of 3 games then take 2 of 3 against the Brewers and Cards after that.

Chalk that L up to bad defense.

Hate the Reds

Runs 1, 2, and 3 due to solo wind-aided HR's (didn't see them but that's according to Twitter). Runs 4, 5, and 6 all happened after errors. I'm calling Rizzo's dropped pop up an error, gotta make those plays in the MLB. Included in all that is not scoring with bases loaded with 1 out in the 6th. Dumb loss

Cubs just traded for the Royals Maldonado. Hopefully Willy is fine.

Gave up Mike Montgomery

Wow, a stopgap catcher is all the return they got from Montgomery. That's a really poor use of resources.

Not sure Montgomery had much trade value at all. Maybe could have gotten an obscure low level prospect but that’s about it. He’s been really bad this season and the advanced metrics don’t do him any favors either.

My gut feeling is that Contreras injury is something that he may not be 100% again the rest of the year so they had to move fast on this deal. Monty has not looked right this season so not sure he had much value right now. Guessing this signals they will be in the market for a specialist lefty as well.

I get that, but trading him when his value is this low is the part I have a problem with. He still has two years of team control, he's been a very valuable swingman in year's past.
