The Salvation Army band played
And the children drank lemonade
And the morning lasted all day, all day
And through an open window came
Like Sinatra in a younger day
Pushing the town away, oh
Ah hey ma ma mommy doo-din-nie-ya
Ah hey ma ma ma hey-y-yah
Life in a northern town
Ah hey ma ma ma ma
They sat on the stoney ground
And he took a cigarette out
And everyone else came down to listen
He said in winter 1963
It felt like the world would freeze
With John F. Kennedy
And The Beatles
Of course, I have a Barbara Mandrell entry for this week's thread. "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool" was written for Barbara by the songwriting team that wrote many of her biggest hits (Kye Fleming and Dennis Morgan). She recorded it for her "Live" album in 1981 and it went to #1 in Billboard on July 4th of that year. The song features an uncredited George Jones on the back end. It was nominated for CMA Single of the Year that fall (losing to "Elvira"), helped her win an (at the time) unprecedented second CMA Entertainer of the Year award, and became the most recognizable recording of her career.
