There are two arguments here for this award:

# 1 - COY is given to the coach from the team picked in the preseason to win the conference and they did it.
or
# 2 - COY is given to the coach from the team that overachieved on their preseason prediction in the conference.

There is no right/wrong answer here, all comes down to how the coaches voted.

Based on #1 they may as well name the award the Kim Mulkey trophy. It definitely doesn’t apply to other Big 12 sports. If it did, our football coach wouldn’t have any. Look at other conferences. In the Big East the fourth place team had the co-coach of the year. In men’s basketball it’s been rare for the top team's coach to get COY. The argument for 1st being automatic just doesn’t fly.

I love this year's edition of the twister sisters. Fennelly has them playing very well. Maybe he'd have won if Baylor hadn't gone undefeated.

Interesting thought, if Alabama and Clemson wanted to join the Big XII would you want them?

Baylor's the #1 team in the nation. Hard to argue with that.

Kind of agree with this. Coaches build and "coach" the team. She built a better team and that is a huge part of being a college coach. It's not like she didn't have to do any coaching after giving her starting point guard the boot this fall.

Brenda won Big 10 COY because she won the conference (again) by eeking out Iowa. If Iowa had won it than Bluder would have been COY. Similar situations as both ISU and Iowa had their leagues POY and finished 2nd.

Personally, I think coach of the year should go to the coach of a team that highly overachieved and finished top 2 or 3, if there was one. In the absence of that, the coach that finished first. There is no doubt Baylor did exactly as expected to, but Iowa State vastly overachieved. Bill should have been coach of the year.

I bet Bill is 1000000000000000% OK with this since Bridget won.

Agreed, but he also despises Mulkey. If given the choice, he would want player recognition first any day. Would have been nice for him to beat her out for this.

Bill himself has said many times COY should go to conference winner. Recruiting is a coach's job too.

It's not like this is his first year on the job. He is a veteran coach at an established program. ISU may have overachieved a little based on expectations, but Bill also has ownership of those lowered expectations to begin with. He is a great coach and did a great job, but hard to argue this case.
