Fun read. Very cool concept. I wonder how long Blum has been waiting to write this. And whether he did so now while things are going well because it wouldn't be nearly as fun if something bad happens later this season.

At least by one rating...

...this is the second-best team in school history.

I have a hard time taking this seriously when seeing the 16-17 team is ranked above the 2000 team.

That team for Monté's senior year was really good.

Even if you take the above as providing relative ranges rather than absolute rankings, the team this season is quickly playing itself into being one of the best teams in school history.

It's not IF but WHEN something bad happens later in the season.
Iowa State has lost the last game of the season every year that I've followed them. Maybe they'll win it all this year but I doubt it.

Those Eustachy teams taught me a lot about following CBB. I was skeptical for way too long after the Drake loss. I didn't really realize how good of a team it was until the win in Lawrence in Feb and then they promptly followed it up with a stinker at Colorado. Then of course the MSU debacle. Then 00-01 had the disastrous end.

I long ago vowed to always enjoy the wins, not undersell the current team, and stop worrying about when the music might stop. I think Blum's article captured it perfectly.

Ehhh...the 16-17 team played a much tougher conference schedule. I think the 2000 team was better but I can see the argument.

2000 team also had a go-to from the beginning, whereas the 16-17 team spent half the season looking for Georges when it needed a bucket, and got pressed on the perimeter due to lack of inside game.

99-00 team also had some quality depth imo with guys like Shirley which helped.

Cool list though for sure...the fun part is the ceiling might be pretty high for this group.

For them to not lose the 'last game of the year' would that be winning the national champ game. Because there would be no games left to play?

The Big 12 had an average SRS of 17.44 for Monté's senior year.

In 2000 (the Fizer-Tinsley year), that same number was 10.14 -- so Monté, Naz, Matt, and Deonte were playing against a conference team that was seven points better on average compared to the Fizer-Tinsley team of yore. That is a heck of a lot of difference there.

Kansas was 11-5 in the conference that year. They were 16-2 in 2017. Their starting lineup was Graham, Jackson, Lucas, Frank Mason, and Svi Miyuoansdaljja. That is a really great basketball team, and Fizer never really faced such a conference foe.

People underappreciated how much of a gauntlet the Big 12 was in that era. The fact the late Fred and early Steve teams played as well against that as they did, even if they did not have the same W-L records of some of the 1990s teams, is really impressive on those grounds.

Monté never lost to Drake either.

Clever concept. I'm glad Blum's younger self noticed the TCU reference; Current Me didn't give it a second thought. :)

Among my favorite parts: "Although that growth spurt never really happens, so when you work with Sage Rosenfels, they make you stand on a box on TV." :D

To “settle” the debate regarding the 1999-2000 vs. 2016-17 teams, I consulted What If Sports, and simulated a best-of-7 series, all on a “neutral” court/

(I assume the neutral court was Hilton .. just a guess! :)).

Game-by-game results:
Game 1: (99-00) def. (16-17), 79-77; 99-00 leads series 1-0.
Game 2: (99-00) def. (16-17), 86-74; 99-00 leads series 2-0.
Game 3: (16-17) def. (99-00), 96-87; 99-00 leads series 2-1.
Game 4: (99-00) def. (16-17), 90-84; 99-00 leads series 3-1.
Game 5: (16-17) def. (99-00), 80-75; 99-00 leads series 3-2.
Game 6: (99-00) def. (16-17), 84-79; 99-00 wins series 4-2.

There ya have it. :)

I'm picturing 2001 Blum imagining that someday he will be broadcasting Iowa State games with Sage Rosenfels.

Run out of the dance after losing a girl during a Shaggy song yelling: 'Aside from the ISU basketball season going well, can this year get any worse!?'

Cruel March Madness '01 gods: 'Why yes, yes it can'.

I had that site do a one-game playoff between 2016-2017 (so Donovan Jackson's junior year) and 2017-2018 (so Donovan Jackson's senior year. The result was bonkers.

This would have been the greatest ending to a college basketball game in history...

upload_2019-2-7_15-33-51.png

I will just zoom in on the last thirty seconds...

upload_2019-2-7_15-36-1.png

That has to be the zaniest ending to a college basketball game of all-time.

Solomon Young made a full-court shot while Prohm was somehow someway playing Nick and Holden before he would play Burton in an end-game situation.

So I take that site with a grain of salt. :p

Go through and adjust the playing time priorities of the site to be more reasonable.
