Now that we've finished up another full year of movies, kind of like last year, I thought it would be fun to post another thread where we can debate all our favorite movies from the previous year. The only rules are the following:

1. You have to have seen the movie to list it
2. This is a list of your personal favorite movies of the year, not necessarily the movies you think are best

With that said, to start things out, I'll list out all of mine. Here is a link listing out all the movies from the year to help you out: https://www.firstshowing.net/schedule2018/

  1. Avengers: Infinity War

Annihilation below a lot of bad movies. It was one of my favorite movies of the year.

Was it just me, or was this a relatively weak year?

There were some good popcorn flicks, but not sure I can think of any all-timers.

The best thing I can think of was The Favourite, which was great, but not that great.

Still have not seen Roma so I reserve my right to be a snob yet.

Out of that list I've see Annihilation. I've seen a few more movies this year but apparently they weren't very memorable because nothing comes to mind.

Oh, I saw Halloween. It was better than I thought it would be. Not great but better.

Edit: I saw Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Pretty bad.

I didn't see that many in comparison to a lot of other years. Most of my choices have to appeal to an 11-year old (not Deadpool or Blockers obviously) but I had my fair share of misses this past year. I don't need to re-watch any of the bottom half of my list.

Avengers: Infinity War - probably my favorite
Spider-Man:Into the Spiderverse - really came away impressed
Tag - better that I thought, fun flick
Incredibles II - better the second time for me
Ant Man and the Wasp - fun movie, although some scenes were too heavy on CGI
Deadpool II - funnier when I'm in the mood for some crude humor
Black Panther - 2nd watching was better, but still missing something
Game Night - some good quick humor
Wreck-It-Ralph II - disappointing after the first one was so freaking good
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - it was ok for what it was
Isle of Dogs - I like a lot of Wes Anderson's stuff, but I struggled with this one
Skyscraper - cookie cutter action flick, but somewhat entertaining
Solo - liked it less with a second watch, some good parts, but this one missed the mark
Tomb Raider - just ok
House With a Clock in It's Walls - bad
Rampage - worse
Wrinkle in Time - I need acid after watching this
Blockers - I don't mind a little low brow stoner humor, but ugh, this was just not funny at all

I thought it was a relatively weak year for films. I just categorize mine as films I would pay to see again or recommend, good entertainment, disappointing (compared to expectations), and poor use of $.

Films I Would Recommend/Pay to See Again
Blind Box (Netflix)
A Quiet Place
Avengers: Infinity War
Deadpool 2
Game Night
Spiderman: Into the SpiderVerse
Bad Times at the El Royale

Good Entertainment
Ocean's 8
Den of Thieves
Molly's Game
Tag
Ready Player One
Annihilation
12 Strong
Upgrade
The Commuter
Mamma Mia 2
Cam (Netflix)
Possession of Hanna Grace

Disappointing Compared to Expectations
Wreck-It-Ralph 2
Wrinkle in Time
Isle of Dogs
First Purge
Unfriended: Dark Web
Night School
Girl w Spider Tattoo
Blockers

Bad
Pacific Uprising (watched on HBO)
SlenderMan (watched on HBO)

I will cut some slack for Paris since it starred the actual heroes, which I appreciate.

My biggest disconnect was Hereditary. Got awesome reviews. I was not impressed at all.

If you get a chance, see the documentary "Free Solo", a two year effort to climb El Capitan(Yosemite) alone with no safety equipment.

A stunning look into the psyche of the soloist, the amazing film crew and others close by.

The last 20 minutes will have you hanging on to your seat.

Avengers: Infinity War - easily the best for me (although it took a 2nd viewing for me to fully appreciate.

Also like Bohemian Rhapsody and I Can Only Imagine (probably 2nd fav)

Not as much, but also enjoyed:

Black Panther (although over-hyped IMO)
Quiet Place
Aquaman

Decent/OK:
The Incredibles 2
Ready Player One
Solo: A Star Wars Story

Disappointed:

The House with the Clock in the Wall

I think if I watched it a second time, A Simple Favor would probably move up the list. I just wasn't sure what to make of it while I was watching it.

The biggest surprise to me was how much I enjoyed To All the Boys I've Loved Before.

I guess I didn't like The Avengers movie as much as most of you. I thought there were just too many characters and too much action and not enough story development. I know it's an action movie but I enjoyed the other Avengers movies more.

I didn't hate any of the movies on this list.

I have not seen a great deal of these - but here are the few I saw (disregard the numbers - I can't get them to delete without totally deleting an entry):
  1. Black Panther - was very good social commentary, but didn't adore it. Not really sure it belongs as an Oscar best pic nom
  2. Deadpool 2 - was hilarious. Not quite as strong as the first, but was still very funny.
  3. Ready Player One - not a great movie, but I didn't expect it to be.
  4. The Incredibles 2 - enjoyed it, bought it for the kids. Not as good as the first one, but it would be hard to be.
  5. Aquaman - was fine as a movie, much better as eye candy.
  6. Mary Poppins Returns - was adorable.
  7. Ralph Breaks the Internet - we liked it. Like Incredibles 2, it had a pretty high bar to meet in its predecessor that it didn't quite match, but was good.

We saw it at an Imax theater last week. It was pretty incredible. Then it was the craziest thing that we saw him at a mall the next day with the same girlfriend, I guess he was in LA because of some award nomination for the film.

This was my opinion after seeing first time. Took a 2nd viewing for me and then LOVED it. Curious if you've seen it more than once? I think your opinion will change.

I've only seen it once. I The second time would probably be be less confusing. There certainly were enough entertaining parts to it. It was just a bit of overload for my feeble mind.

Thanks for whipping out Cloverfield Paradox. While not a great movie, I almost forgot that was this year. I've now added it to my list.

"White Boy Rick" is a decent movie, but only because it's based on a true story.

I will say that 2018 saw a pretty strong return of a few quality chick flicks, which I'll fully admit is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. As you can see by my list at the beginning of this thread, I really loved both Crazy Rich Asians as well as Set It Up (Netflix Original). In fact, those two movies were two of the best chick flicks I've seen in years. I absolutely loved them.

agreed. It is info overload and for me, it didn't help that I hadn't watched the last Thor movie first. The 2nd time I was able to relax a little more and enjoy the ride....while catching several things lost on me the first time.
