Looking for recommendations for a local shop to replace a rear wheel bearing on a 2014 Malibu. Car X quoted $1000. Sounds pretty high. Any advice would be appreciated.

I've heard good things about Christian Brothers

Also might not hurt to try the Chevy dealership, considering how new your car is - for service and parts they're usually good about taking care of "their own"

Guy at Tuffy is pretty nice. They worked with me on several things over the years and are always better priced than others I have asked.

Super shady update. Car X called back half hour later and offered to knock $300 off the price.
If you cannot find anyone you like....have half a day, hard surface and a floor jack.....go buy the entire hub, get on youtube for instructions and do it yourself. The worst part about these is if they are corroded, then you have to beat them out. If not......it's not that difficult and you save yourself a butt load of money.

Second vote for Tim's BP. Ask for Dale. He won't jack you around like most places.
Third... Great place and does just about anything for a fair price. Everytime I get a nail in my tire it's on the outer tread, and they were one of the few who would repair it, at times for free if you brought the tire in.

$1000 (or even $700) to replace a single wheel bearing is ridiculous.

A rear hub/bearing assembly is usually pretty easy to replace on a front wheel drive car. Just take off the wheel, brake caliper, rotor and then usually 3 bolts holding the hub assembly in from the back side.

Edit: Found a vid. There's an extra step of unhooking the upper control arm or whatever that is, but no sweat.

$120 at O'Reilly's.

$118 at Autozone and not hard to do it. $1,000 is pure robbery and doesn't surprise me coming from Car X. Stay away from that swindle shop and Tuffy's as well. As ISUAlum says, it's a pretty easy job. Heck, depending on how soon you wanted it done, I'd help you and Iive in Waukee.

Woof. I got my bearings, ball joint, control arm, new front brake disks, front tires, and aligned for 1300 in Charles City.
