Why has Jon Heacock been so much more successful than Wally Burnham?

Well, to be perfectly honest, we were shaping up to have a decent defensive line with David Irving and Rodney Coe. I think their dismissals hurt a lot and sent the whole defensive unit into a bit of a death spiral.

Wally Burnham was VERY highly regarded when he came here, yet his defenses were never as good as this year's defense, in Jon Heacock's second year. Why was Wally never quite able to put together really good defensive teams here? Especially since his head coach was a former defensive coordinator himself.

Nobody cared about recruiting?

Heacock is just flat out better and we have better coaches. Rhoads and Wally were supposed to be defensive savants, looks at the poor defense here and the current defense at Arkansas. There is a pattern....

We had as good, if not better, personnel when Rhoads and Burnham were here. Including the D Line. Heacock is the real deal.
I somewhat agree till 2013. From then on our talent was definitely depleted from our recruiting failures. DL this year though is best since 2005.

Tackling. Wally put his guys in the right position, they just missed the play too often. There's a lot more to coaching than calling plays on gameday.
