Excluding Kagavi's work, has there ever been research on who the players of our "first" team were?

I'd love to know some back stories. Please let there be someone with a great name like "Crazy Legs" Hallahan.

Consider yourself in half luck, I put this post up as a spoiler for one of my articles coming out on WRNL. The best nickname on the 1895 team was for Clarence "The Beard" Lewis. (top right) The article promises to be decent one, full of tragedy for some, and triumph for the quarterback. Stay tuned!

According to Wikipedia the first team would be 1892, or maybe 1984.

Football first made its way onto the Iowa State campus in 1878 as a recreational sport, but it wasn't until 1892 that an organized group of athletes first represented Iowa State in football. In 1894, college president William M. Beardshear spearheaded the foundation of an athletic association to officially sanction Iowa State football teams. The 1894 team finished with a 6–1 mark, including a 16–8 victory over what is now the University of Iowa.[3]

Fully half of them look like they could be featured in some sort of 19th Century mad/psychotic killer special.

Warner is in the back row standing on the left.
Also, I hate to break it to you but that is wrong for this picture. You are likely thinking of the attached picture. Warner left the team in mid September to coach at Georgia. (Note the Champions of Iowa ball, we played and beat Iowa 24-0 on October 28th that season.)

I was talking about the picture in my link. I know everything you just posted. You can find the picture at the Ames Public Library site, assuming it is still there.
