Did Jack only play in one game? Josh stated ISU wore red at the Simpson game and the game photo shows what appears to be Jack on the field and says it's the Simpson game at the bottom of the photo "Ames vs Simpson". So are we only memorializing the uni he wore the day he was injured? Seems historical accuracy may include both colors.

Glad to help clear up things. If people take the time to read all of our work, there should be no confusion.

And no, it's not yellow, no way.

I've seen you saying this in reference to two photos now--you are getting a bit confused. The photo in the original post (and all the famous pictures of Jack) has the gold jerseys in them. The Simpson game photo that appeared in the other thread saw ISU wearing temporary cardinal jerseys. However, before we exclusively unveiled that photo on our website last fall, all known pictures of Jack showed him in the gold jerseys.

The photos almost certainly are red unis.

If you are referring to the jerseys in the original post, they are conclusively gold.

My question is did that team (in your researched view) also have red jersey's as well in this time period, but the photos we have still are of them wearing the gold jersey?

It's not in question that they wore red jersey's at some point that season or is it?

For many years, Jack Trice has been shown in the famous black and white pictures wearing the GOLD jersey with the pointed stripes in front. This was a new gold jersey unveiled by Coach Sam Willaman in anticipation of the 1923 season when all of his highly touted recruits, including Jack Trice, were finally eligible. Before we started our Jack Trice project, all of the known existing pictures of Jack Trice showed him in the gold jerseys.

The 1923 season had 8 games and the team was looking forward to showing off their fancy new GOLD jerseys throughout the whole season.

Jack Trice's first game in an ISU uniform was against Simpson College in Ames one week before the infamous Minnesota game. During the era these "practice games" were the equivalent of non-conference games like UNI nowadays. Last minute, the team found out that Simpson would be bringing their own gold jerseys, creating a potential problem. (In 1922, the team had been forced to wear "double" wool jerseys to create contrast with their cardinal jerseys in at least one game, which led to an overheating team and Coach Willaman designing the gold jerseys in 1923.)

Fortunately, Coach Sam Willaman had some unused cardinal jerseys with what appeared to be brown leather friction stripes in front. The stripes were NOT pointed in front, and are visually different from the gold jerseys. This was so unplanned that the jerseys didn't even have numbers on the back. This problem was solved by painting the numbers on the helmets of the ISU players.

This can be seen in the Simpson game photo that we own. But if people go back and see that photo, note how Simpson's gold jerseys look pretty much the same as ISU's cardinal jerseys.

After that unexpected detour, the ISU team wore their fancy new GOLD jerseys the rest of the season starting with the Minnesota game that Jack started in before exiting in the third quarter with his fatal injuries.

The following week, after Jack's funeral and prior to the Missouri game, the Ames team attached black memorial bands on the arm sleeves of the GOLD jerseys. At some point after Jack's death ISU also distributed copies of Jack Trice wearing his GOLD jersey to the public.

Prior to our exclusive reveal of the Simpson game photo, 100% of all existing ISU photos of Jack Trice and his teammates in 1923 showed the new GOLD jerseys.

The following 1924 season after Jack's death, Coach Willaman introduced additional cardinal jerseys with either black or blue friction stripes in front.

In conclusion, during the vast majority of 1923, including the spring game, 7 out of 8 games of the season, especially the iconic Minnesota game, and the well-known media day photos of Jack and his teammates, the ISU team wore the GOLD jerseys.

The Simpson game was a temporary blip of discarded cardinal jerseys--remember it was so unplanned, they didn't even have jersey numbers.

Hope that clears it all up. :)
