Smoking Meat Questions and Discussion

Masterbuilt Gravity Series----Any reviews? I know they have been out a few years. Are they falling apart, rusting out or whatever? I have a masterbuilt electic smoker and I use a smoke tube, works great. But it is 8 years old.
Quoting myself :)

"A hidden gem is the masterbuilt gravity smoker for $500. It's probably going to last you less than 7 years, but those gravity smokers put out some great flavor. I think the biggest mistake people make is running them up to 700 degrees. They are cheaply built, but if you use them strictly as a smoker, they are a good buy."

Thanks. It seems like many times online reviews are not very critical or are too critical of irrelivent details. Thats just me. In Cyclonefanatic I trust!
Yeah the Basement Hangout guys are great. I found them a few months ago and devoured all their content...which sold me on the Searwood.

Searwood took me about 80 mins to assemble alone. Impressed with the build quality as expected from Weber. Very different than my OG Rec Tec, as that was pretty heavy steel. Excited to try the rotisserie tonight!
Really interested to hear a review on it in a few months. I like my RT-590 but it's become pretty clear that Recteq isn't what they were before private equity entered the chat. The Searwood looks like a strong candidate in that pricepoint now.

I will absolutely recap sometime this summer about how its going. My 2014 Rec Tec was built super solid, but all of the RT's I've looked at in person seem to be less so. I'm sure they're still a good product though.

Nicely done. Which gozney do you have? I have the arc xl and freaking love it.
I have the Dome.

I really want to upgrade to the Dome XL, but I’ve only had the Dome a year, so I’ll give it a run again this summer and see how it goes :)

I absolutely love it and last summer was a blast trying all types of pizzas and having a lot of people over for pizza parties was also a blast.

I used my Pit Boss pellet grill as a pizza oven for the first time last fall and it was super easy to do with that. I couldn't justify buying a dedicated oven for that when this works great.

My old Traeger (Silverton model) is from around 2018. I use it at least once or twice a week (even in the winter). The controller went bad and Traeger wanted $165 for a replacement, and I thought it wasn't worth it given the age and condition of the grill. I did try to get an Amazon knock off and the wiring has a different connector on one part. I am thinking I am just going to upgrade. I have been pretty happy with Treager but open to other options. I know the founders of Traeger sold it and went to work for Pit Boss. I have heard good things about Rec Teq, but wanted to get some opinions on what everyone likes. I would like to stay in the $800-$1000 range due to my current budget.

Totally get it, but my Dome gets to 1000 degrees. You can never do that in a pellet grill.

Just depends what you like to do. Plus the Dome can cook almost anything. You can even do BBQ in it with a true wood fire.

I have a Recteq 590 circa 2021 that I have been very happy with. There have been a lot of changes since then both in the company and their grill lineup after they sold to a PE firm. I do not know anyone with the new grills, but based upon Facebook and Reddit groups I'm apart of the general consensus is that they are still solid, but not what they once were. Same thing that happens to almost every company that private equity enters - profit starts to trump quality. If I were in the market again in that price range I would give both Weber and Camp Chef a serious look alongside RT. Grilla is another company I looked at before I purchased that seems to have followed a same track as RT regarding PE.

That sounds about right.

Noob question...why wouldn't you just put the chops directly on the grates? Is this just to keep the grill cleaner (capture the drippings for easy disposal)?

Yes. I've owned the grill for 8 year and only vacuumed out the inside, except for maybe one spill inside.
