Off-season 2026; Roster Needs/Portal

I've said it before, but relying on the transfer portal is an ugly game. We've had some overall terrible ncaa tournament results from our portal guys.

A lot of them have been damaged goods going into the ncaa tournament it feels like. 9/10 champs this year have only been with the program where they won it (the exception was Mesenbrink, so you could argue 10/10). 17/20 finalists were home-grown in the program. (Caliendo, Mesenbrink, and Welsh are the exceptions).

So, what do you think ISU should do? Fact is we’re not able to recruit the HS talent like PSU/OSU/TOSU who accounts for the majority of those NCAA finalists. It may be ugly, but is a necessity for the vast majority of programs, including ISU.

This.

And what would have happened had we not brought in transfers the past few years? Likely not even getting qualifiers at those weights

125 - PSU vs Princeton (1)
133 - OSU vs TOSU (2)
141 - OSU vs TOSU (2)
149- Stanford vs PSU (1)
157- OSU vs Nebraska (1)
165- PSU vs Iowa (1)
174 - PSU vs Nebraska (1)
184- Minn vs PSU (1)
197 - PSU vs OkSt (2)
HWT - NCST vs ISU (0)

Like you said of the 20 finalists 12 of them came just from PSU/OSU/TOSU. So the question then becomes can we recruit HS talent against Iowa? Nebraska? What about now VT and NCST? I would love to be able to but we still have to do transfers to field a competitive team and hopefully find the hidden diamonds and snag a top 30 every once in a while (that show out). Castillo we all have high hopes for.. unfortunately Rojas and now Tate (13 and 27 respectably) are going elsewhere, Casey (3) already left us.

My 1st thought, I’d lean harder on portal guys with multiple years

Okay, 17/20 of the guys who wrestle for 3rd/4th also haven’t wrestled for another team except the team they are currently on. They haven’t ever been portal guys. And 15/20 of those guys don’t wrestle for tOSU/OKST/PSU. 34 of the top 40 haven’t ever been in the portal. 23 of the top 40 aren’t from those 3 power-house mentioned programs.
