Big 12 Wrestling Tournament

How many all Americans do we think we will get?

My guess is 5: 285, 197, 141, 125, 157
I want to believe! recent history is not on our side, though. We have only had more than 4 AAs in a year one time since 2004, and that one time was still nearly 20 years ago.

How many of those years did we have 6 AAs in the tournament. I doubt we have had 10 wrestlers qualify with probably 9 being seeded in the top 12.

Sure if Vinnie & Dean are not able to compete to their ability due to injuries that will hurt in the team race but we aren’t the only team that will not be at 100%. I expect Vinnie to be 100% but have no inside information. Dean is more of a concern since he re-injured the knee that has kept him out since 2/1.

It seems like most people on here expect ISU to underperform. Let’s see the brackets first. We have 9 guys that have beaten at least 1 top 8 guy this season so we have several guys that can make a run at NCAAs.

Vinny took a pretty nasty blow to the noggin. I would be shocked if he's anywhere close to 100%. But Vinny at <100% is better than a lot of wrestlers.

What does underperform mean to you? Most predictions seem to be in the 4-6 AA range. That seems pretty in line with what like Flo would say (4 guys in top 8, lots in blood round).

The weird thing is that he apparently passed the concussion protocol and was able to finish the match. So, I don’t think we really know, did he have a concussion or was him defaulting out just purely precautionary?

Sometimes, the effects aren’t 100% immediate. I had teammates who played football and would have probably passed the basics but after the game the adrenaline wore off and they got sensitive to lights and sounds.

Agree. He did not look well that afternoon, and was absent from the social on Saturday night in Tulsa. Dresser said he was back at the hotel to stay out of the bright lights and loud noises. None of that means he won't be ready for Nationals, but if he's resting and unable to do any working out for a bit, at the very least his lungs will take a hit.

How is his weight in general? Is it something he has to work on or is he pretty naturally right there?

I know nothing about concussion protocol, but Vinny was up 6-2 with 30 seconds left. I wonder if there was 6 minutes left, if he would have finished it. I am just speculating with no knowledge of the circumstances. He could run for 30 seconds and not loss that match and give him a win and probably not hurt his seed as bad.

My understanding is that has nothing to do with it. The concussion protocol is administered by medical staff (doctors/trainers) and the athlete only allowed to return if it is deemed they did not suffer a concussion. It would be very reckless to send someone back out, even for 30 seconds if the medical staff diagnosed a concussion.

When I was an EMT and we checked for concussions, typically we would shine lights in their eyes to see if pupils responded and if it bothered them severely. Also would check if their eyes tracked along with questions about coherency. Some are pretty easy and some are very borderline. Most will err on the side of caution so they are not medically responsible.

But like I said, sometimes the symptoms take a bit to show.

Like I said, I have zero knowledge. Is it Iowa State's medical staff that does concussion protocol?

Not sure at an event like Big 12s. Would imagine they have a doctor on the ready that is involved along with ISU trainer, but I don’t know.

Just filling you in on the process and that this is a medical decision. Would be a big liability risk for any medical professional to send an athlete back out if they are demonstrating signs of a concussion. There should be no consideration given to the time left in the match or impact on qualification/seeds/etc.

But, as @BCClone noted it is entirely possible that Vinny was able to pass the initial assessment and then the concussion symptoms became more evident later on.

We dont want a wrestler that's afraid to wrestle for a spot anyway. Wrestle offs should decide early season starter no exceptions other than redshirts. Later season it can be based on performance.
This is my overall conclusion too. It’s worth it at the end of the day.
