What is everyone using to cover up their window wells, to keep leaves and other crap from falling into it. I have been trying to find a company here around Ames that offers something that would do the job and cannot find anything. It would have to be able to either be hinged so people could get out in case of fire or pop off, and strong enough to support the weight of our 2 Goldens if they walked on it. I have tried a few companies online but they are all out of state and want anywhere from $500 to $800 each. Any ideas or companies that I could call to get an estimate. Thanks.

I bought some well covers several years ago, mainly to keep critters out (we had a bird, a raccoon and a frog in there). Amazon has a bunch of them, but the problem is usually finding ones the right size. I ended up just buying ones that were a bit oversized.
We had an egress window put in by BAM Basement Systems in Ankeny. They have someone that custom makes them for what I remember to be a very reasonable price. We didn’t since nobody is ever on that side of the house. Maybe call them and ask for who they use.
Would just buy some cheap lumber and strong plexiglass and custom build something if the cheap ones at the local box store aren't sturdy enough. My egress window well someone before we owned the home just bought some 1x4 and wood lattice and constructed a cover that looks nicer than a plastic cover or dome would. We don't have any pets to worry about so it does the job and blends in nice with the landscaping too
Sister has those cheesy plastic covers that mostly work but look like crap. Am actually curious if you guys have some better options.

Still worth getting them. My dad had a skunk in one of his a few years ago that burrowed almost all the way under the foundation.
This guy got in there right after it was put in. Tore the **** out of the screen. I’ll end up making my own, I just haven’t. Low on the priority list.

Said skunk ripped up the screen too and it's a metal screen. Didn't realize how sharp their claws are.
About 15 years ago there was a guy in my old neighborhood that custom welded them as a side gig for a really good price.
I took him up on that after I fell in one while weed whacking one day. I had some painful scrapes and bruises but it could have been much worse.
