Built a new deck last spring. City inspector stopped on by yesterday. All I did was re deck it so I didnt tell the city. Well got fined 40 bucks. I hate Ames sometimes...

Wait. Did you build a new deck or just replace the decking boards? Remember, the inspections are there for the stupidest amongst us. I’m sure they’ve seen people replace 2” decking with 5/4” and the joist spacing is too wide and not even thought about such things.

This gets a dislike due to the inspector coming for no reason.

Outside CR in Linn County, the assessor's office people literally drive around and look for contractor trucks or roll-offs. I wouldn't be surprised if they narc to the permitting office as well.

I have the opposite problem. Had a contractor tear off an old 10x10 deck and replaced it with a 16x16. The city inspector came out at least twice during the build but on the assesor website it doesnt show a permit being issued.

Ya there was no reason for stopping by. I always thought if nothing strutural doesnt change big whoop.

What was the fine for? I feel like that was an overreach. But then again, pissing off an inspector is on a short list of things not to do in a relatively small city with only a couple inspectors.

I assume you checked by your address? I would guess that your contractor doesn't have a contractor license and someone else pulled the permit.

Assuming you live in town? Plans/Permits. If you have any questions call the city. If they can’t answer your questions, they will put you in contact with the inspector.

Check your city's website for information. Your contractor usually takes care of all the permits, always check with the city to make sure they did. If it's a DIY hopefully you are familiar with the local codes.

Finished my basement summer 23, much like the OPs. Lookout with wrap insulation as shown. I did 2x4 walls inside of this (and utilities) pushing as close as I could for that section of wall. I then insulated the 2x4 walls with rolled fiberglass. Rocked over.

As far as the inspector deal. I did mine proper. Submitted permit (Norwalk), inspector did pre/post drywall inspection. The post drywall inspection was a waste of time. They didn't check anything and just looked around... asked about bathroom GFCI to which I said was on the panel. Didn't even go confirm.
