I have no idea what are good areas or bad, but we are looking to maybe make a trip to LA this weekend. Anyone know of any good hotels that aren't TOO expensive. Is the area near Dodger stadium worth looking into, anything walking distance?

LA in its entirety is a hole in the Earth. Stay away.
I just got back from Chicago yesterday and I thought the same thing about it.
Bad areas would be. South Central, Compton, Watts, Long Beach.
There's plenty of room at the Hotel California. Such a lovely place.
Yeah, if you stay with friends in Orange County, you will spend some time on the freeways. I would suggest checking out some of the downtown hotels. There is a variety of price ranges, but be careful. If anything is too cheap, the area is probably not good. Again, don't think about walking anywhere, epescially at night downtown. There is bus service, but don't think I would suggest using that. If you don't want to rent a car, your best option is probably to take a cab wherever you need to go, but again, that will not be cheap. But, Dodger stadium is really close to downtown, just off Sunset, or just off the Pasadena Freeway.
You can pm me if you want.
At least in Chicago, you don't see the air.
