I think the unspoken idea when Chris started IE was that it would act as a replacement for KXNO on the new medium of podcasts and on demand entertainment, to prepare for both changing listener habits and the day iHeart finally succeeds in gutting the station.

I wish they had another Cyclone pod to replace Nick and Jake, but CF will do in the meantime. Even the hawk stuff like CL and Doc’s show are shows that would’ve fit on KXNO 10-20 years ago.
I'd bet good $ something is lined up by late July on that front.

Two Guys Named Chris podcast. CW and Chris Hassel. Twice a week podcast 50/50 cyclones/hawkeyes.

To me it’s proof KXNO could have covered ISU and Iowa simultaneously and genuinely. It’s a show that would never celebrate pushing Alan Lazard to flip his commitment from ISU to Notre Dame like M&A felt they had to.

It’s like when CW and Ross P hosted their Kxno show but Hassel brings enough he’s enjoyable as an ISU fan.

I also liked Jon Miller on Kxno as an honest Iowa homer, even in his troll days, he had a little something. M&A would grind my gears because I never felt they were genuine with Iowa/ISU rivalry, they came off like Iowa fans putting on an act. They languished about that fair catch call for months when they’d always criticized ISU fans for obsessing about any equally game altering blown call. It was actually better when Drake was in ncaa tournament and Andy could at least be genuine about that.
I actually do know what this is. I didn't get the initials.
I can only take CW in small doses, unfortunately.

You and me both. I haven't listened to the trash on KXNO since Williams left and haven't missed it at all. So much better stuff out there although that doesn't take much to surpass anything KXNO puts out.

It was a perfect storm where a wnba preseason game absolutely required 20x more coverage than a 4 year starter ISU quarterback starting a superbowl. They had no choice.

My guess is they are going to shuffle the chairs on the deck of the titanic once again like they have the past few times when someone leaves and either move hosts around or most likely they will just move Miller and Condom to that time slot and put national programming in their midday time slot.

They really could use a new personality or 2 outside of the current KXNO staff if they were to create a new local show. Someone not as well known with a fresh perspective that can actually have a show that isn't full of fluff to fill the time like the morning and afternoon shows have turned into. I remember the days people here used to rag on Larry Cotlar when he had the morning show but I would love to have someone like that hosting again on KXNO. Larry had a structured show that had regular guests and stayed on topic most of the time without needed a bunch of non-sports talk to fill in the gaps. Those types of hosts like him and Ken Miller are not common anymore it feels like.
Cotlar worked hard. Miss his show.

Have mixed feelings about Murph and Andy ending. Have certainly spent a lot of hours listening to it, but over the past couple years, it has devolved into about half TOE coverage, and half non-sports stuff.

I started to tune them out two years ago during football season when ISU had an upcoming game against Texas, and the other school was idle. Downs was solo on a Wednesday afternoon, and spent the entire first hour talking about Brian Ferentz and the inept Iowa offense. I continued to listen while thinking "surely this can't last forever." It did.

Fales returned the next day and I hoped for some ISU discussion. Nope. The entire first hour was spent re-hashing what Downs talked about on the prior day. My god, the worst offense in the country does not warrant this level of coverage compared to a team that, at the time, was still in the hunt for a conference title.

From that point, I have I just turned it off whenever I hear a Garza, Clark, or Brian reference, and I usually don't turn it back on till the next day. These days, I probably listen to about 5% of the total airtime.

Murphy’s been phoning it in for awhile.
Why work hard and do a great job to become well respected in your field when you can become the #1 cheerleader for a highly recognized polarizing figure and get more attention/view/likes?

Me too, he had a good lineup of guests every week which is something the current KXNO shows other than Miller are lacking. You'd think with all the connections these people have in the market - especially Heather who has not only worked for ESPN before but has done multiple radio shows in this market for a long time they'd be able to line up decent guests on a regular basis to fill the time slots without a bunch of random gibberish. While I don't mind some of the off topic segments like ask 5-0 anything that can't be your main featured segment for the week. Iowa has a pretty diverse base of sports fans since we don't have a pro team in Iowa so even just lining up some regular segments on teams people in the area follow would be an improvement. They've all milked the Caitlin Clark story to death by now to fill air time too.

Everything technically gets ratings... when your ratings equate to 5 iheart radio ads and Ross trying to lure people into the Northwoods with him that is hardly big money advertising.

Oh sorry... forgot APPPPPPROOOOOVVVVEEDDDDD BY JOE.COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

**** outta here douche.
Cry harder. I haven't heard a Joe.com commercial on there in forever. Granted I mainly listen to KXNO while getting ready in the morning.

According to Miller, it sounds like the replacement show is already lined up.

Unfortunately they bought into the attention/views/likes the past few years. They milked that stupid bandgate thing far longer than what was appropriate.

Totally get it and that's why 2 hours/week for these shows is so much better than 10 or 15 hours a week.

Hassel drops some random gems to keep it light hearted and they have a good schtick knocking each other down for their own obvious personal flaws. He came up with a Lou Holtz pep talk for ISU's bye week last year on the fly that was probably the funniest thing I've ever heard on an ISU related show/podcast. The iguana story as a random "other" was hilarious compared to anything I've heard on KXNO. For 1-2 hours a week I can consume any time of day or walking my dogs, I'm def a fan as long as they want to do it.

25 years ago sports talk was basically 10-20 minute doses on a commute once or twice a day. Now people have the option to mainline a crazy amount of talk radio through their phones and blue tooth headphones, it's not really great to do that just because you can.

Band gate and doing zero coverage basically of the racial stuff is when I realized how unserious any of KXNO was about covering Iowa/ISU objectively.

Murph was very critical of KF back around 2014ish when their program was in a relative slump. Then they turned things around in 2015 and he went back to sucking up. Think KF & Iowa regained the cache to remind him who his daddy was.

The whole "Kirk Ferentz is the guy to solve this" line in 2020 was comical.
