That is not true. They added some spots around Hilton that adds or replaces some. But moving the RV to a designated lot opened a huge amount of spots in "D" Which are as close as any we will lose from this.

No spots were added at MWL that is just an exaggeration. The RV lot is what it is, they needed to have an area that works for that. Its not that much further especially with the bridge. The biggest issue there is it puts it in an island on its own.

You should look at other Universities in the Nation, and how much parking there is and how close it is vs ours. ISU has way more than most, and is set up fan friendly compared to most.

The people that park around Hilton are actually gaining a spot that was not there before, because we are gaining several hundred spots over the course of the project....which is about how many were added around Hilton.

The spots gained in"D" and by redesigning the layout, are replacing those lost in through the center of the lots for buildings, which is basically a wash in distance and convenience and value. Replacing C6 and B6 spots with D4 does compare though, no one is foring C6 people out to B1. For the most part it the highest people will stay where they are and the lowest will shuffle down, and no one will move very far from previous parking locations, the lowest point donors will actually gain spots that were not there before, which will be around Hilton.

One can say the RV lot is in a less desirable location, but the amenities it provides makes up for much of that. And regardless of CyTown or not, building an RV lot with the amenities it has was always going to have to move from the lots in "D" to a more suitable location for such a lot.

You are just trying to make it sound worse than it actually is.

I tend to agree with @thisISnextyear. There is no way that you can build CyTown and not displace premium tailgate spaces. Additional spots in the RV lot (many of which went unused last year) and additional spots around C.Y. Stephens may be a net gain in numbers are not necessarily an even trade in quality and convenience. The closest RV spot is much farther from the stadium that C6 and D4.

I would love to get some real numbers of how many spots will be available in the newly paved (yes!) C and D lots.

Probably so. I was asking more about customers of those businesses. People who want to watch the game at the bar/restaurant. Would that even be possible for customers to park there at those times.
I don't think it will be an issue for football as much as basketball but that is a good point. Is there demand for fans to gather and do game watches at these establishments without going into Hilton? Probably not right now but maybe (hopefully) we get back to nearly every game being sold out.

The point is that the people that are in the lower value in certain areas will possibly shift down a bit. So From C to D. The amount of spots opened in D make up for most of what is lost for CyTown. The RV lot yes is not as convenient as far as location, but incorporated many more features to make up for it.

No one that is in the High end spots are suddenly going to be forced out to Hilton. If you are in C6 or B6 you might move to D4 or A4 at worst.(or maybe B5 or C5) But that is only a part of those lots because some of C6 and B6 will still remain as parking. Just the lower level people may move. No one is going to be displaced that far if at all. You may move one lot. You may not. Compared to last year, sure there will be a little because with the RV Lot opening, they had a ton more parking than before, and was only temporary to prepare for CyTown.

No one in B6 is going to be forced to the lots around Hilton. The RV lot is what it is, they were never going to put those kinds of features in the location they had. They had to build a new lot in a new area to incorporate the features they did, they never would have dont that in the D lots.

Minus location the RV park is awesome. I will say if you have people coming to the tailgate and they dont have a parking pass having the public lot next to it works out well.

I don't underestimate the significance of some of these moves. Getting bumped from C6/B6 to D4/A4 is not huge. But getting bumped from C6/B6 to C5/B5 or from D4/A4 to D3/A3 is really going to be painful for those folks, especially the A4 people who have tailgated in the grassy shade for years. Same for the people in D1/C3/B3/A1 who tailgate in the grass along Center Drive. Getting bumped to Hilton/Scheman/Stephens is a big impact to them.

I know, "things change." Yet, that change seems likely to bring some real discomfort. The top of the pecking order will be okay, but those down the line are the ones who will most feel the impact.

The bottom line that I think @thisISnextyear and I are saying is that there will be real impact. A broad statement about how there won't be a loss in overall numbers of paved parking spots masks the real impact.

Again for clarification on parking spots. There will actually be more parking spots after CyTown - Jamie clearly stated this.

But! This is because they are changing the stalls from diagonal parking to 90 degree parking. This is more efficient - more stalls in the same space.

However what concerns me is how this will affect the space for talegating. The triangular spaces created by the sawtooth diagonsl parking were prime talegate spaces.

Do not know how it will work with the right angle parking. Hopefully the aisles will be wider to allow for the tens, etc.

I am pretty sure that this is not the only reason there are “more” spaces.

They’re talking about “more” from the number before the RV’s moved, after all.

What was the final word on the parking garage? Is that still happening? Any updates to what hotel and restaurants are going to be in there? It’s a bummer Topping Goliath fell though but hopefully they get another good brewery.

The only time I have heard about a parking garage, was in conjunction with a hotel, Bottom being parking top being hotel, etc. Similar to many in downtown Minneapolis.

The other time was a small one north of the Alumni Center.

I would also be interested if there was more info out there, or other options I haven't heard about. I thought I remember a small amount of parking included in the CyTown buildings, for suite and business owners, but I cant remember if that was correct or where I saw it. Might be something I am misremembering.

While I’ve done crazier things to support my tailgating problem, I’m not yet ready to go out and count current spaces to compare to the counts included in the link below.

I can't wait for the day where I can park, walk with my son to grab lunch in CyTown, and then walk to go enjoy a 1 PM tip on Hilton.

Agreed. Imagine pulling into the lots at noon for a 3pm Saturday MBB game. Stop in Toppling Goliath for some food and beers. Then head north and catch the end of the 1pm B12 game on the big screen before walking into Hilton. That seems pretty fun to me.

The other thing is that they are covering up the drainage ditches. That's at least another whole row of parking stalls for each ditch. One thing that I don't know is if they are really going to pave those lots north of S. 16th. There are a lot of spots there and it's not a super long walk.

Note that the new, bigger D1 lot has a large L-shaped water detention area. Covering the drainage ditches is not a complete gain of space.

Odds are 50/50 that you will have counted them by the time I post this reply! ;)
Here’s a start. Current configuration A4 has approximately 156 stalls. The new configuration renames it A3 with 173 stalls and it appears to have a larger footprint with the previously mentioned 90 degree parking and extending the south end towards S 4th street with a retaining wall to remove the grass hills near the current sidewalk.

Toppling Goliath pulled out. So Des Moines would probably be their closest location.
